Brussels Atoms lose exhibition game
Brussels atoms played host to
Howick atoms in an exhibition
match Friday night. They were a
bit too hospitable as the visitors left
with a 2-1 victory.
The two teams are a study in
contrast. Howick relies heavily on
Sam Doubleday and Aaron Ste
wart, a pair of over-age boys, both
fast skaters and hard shooters.
Their defence centres around a
brilliant Scott Reichard in between
the pipes. Brussels on the other
hand has a well balanced team
which relies on disciplined defen
sive positioning and control of the
attacking players. Their attack
comes from the fast breakouts,
tenacious checking, constant mo
tion and crisp passing.
Doubleday opened the scoring
early in the first period after
fending off three Brussels check
ers. The defence of Chris Steven
son, Matt Lee, Jeremy Van Keulen
and Todd Machan kept Howick at
bay and maintained constant
pressure in their end with a steady
barrage of shots from the point. It
took u ntil the third period following
a change in position assignments
before a goal resulted as Matt Lee
found the net. The momentary
lapse in forechecking allowed
Stewart to break in from centre ice
to score six minutes later. Despite a
fusilade of shots and including the
full final minute with an extra
Blyth Novices swamp opposition
BYRUSTYBLADES
The Blyth Novice A-team put on
an impressive display of hockey
skills last week as they played two
exhibition games and put two
notches in the W column, while
outscoring the oppositions 17-3.
Last Wednesday, February 4 the
Wingham Nov ices came to town
and they were soundly trounced by
the home town pucksters 7-1.
Winghamopened the scoring
less than a minute into the game
but, from that point on, Blyth
outplayed and out-passed Wing
ham enroute to the victory. Shawn
Hakkerstiedthegamefor Blyth
before the first period ended as
Ryan Chamney and Peter Craig
notched the assists.
There was no scoring in the
second period until the final
minute when Blyth exploded for
three goals in 47 seconds to
completely dmoralize the Wing
ham team. First, Ryan Chamney
scored an unassisted tally. Next
shift, Henry Bos notched a pretty
goal as he was set up beautifully by
Jason Rutledge and Brian Mc-
Nichol. Chris Howson completed
the second stanza scoring with 10
seconds left as Brian McNichol and
Scott Arthur recorded helpers on
the play. Three more unanswered
goals were scored by Blyth in the
third period as Peter Craig garner
ed another assist on Ryan Cham
ney's second goal of the game to
give Blyth a 5 - 1 lead.
Then, Jon at han Collins sent a
clearing pass to Brian McNichol
who scored on another one of his
patented wrist shots. The scoring
was completed with 23 seconds left
in the game as Ryan Chamney
recorded the hat-trick as he took a
pass from Benjie Hakkers in the
corner, carried it to the front of the
Wingham goal and slid a backhand
shot along the ice and into the net.
Blyth played perhaps one of its
bestgamesoftheseasoninthis7-1
win as every part of their game was
working and in high gear.
THUMP RIPLEY 10 -2
An equally impressive contest
was played on Saturday, February
7 as the locals travelled to Ripley
for a rematch of an earlier contest.
Blyth avenged the earlier defeat
with a complete team effort from
the goal line out in an exciting 10-2
thumping. Blyth set the tempo of
the game early as they scored two
goals in the first minute and five
seconds of the game.
Iremember a game Blyth played
in Ripley last year when they won
by a 10 - 0 score. In that game, if my
memory serves me correct, Peter
Craig recorded the hat-trick on
some impressive rink-length rush
es. Well, Peter seems to enjoy
playing in this arena as he opened
the scoringfor Blyth 27 seconds
into the game on another marvel
lous dash from behind his own goal
which ended as the puck hit the
twine behind the Ripley netmind-
er.
Thirty-eight seconds later,
Henry Bos and Ryan Chamney
picked up assists as Jason Rut
ledge scored on the rebound of
Ryan’s shot. Blyth upped the count
to 3 - 0 before the first period ended
as hard-working defenceman Jon
athan Collins sent a clearing pass
out behind the Ripley defence.
Henry Bos outraced the Ripley
defence to the puck and went in
alone on the Ripley goal. The
Scoring Machine made no mistake
on the breakaway as he completely
befuddled the Ripley goalkeeper.
Henry opened the second period
scoring as he was positioned
perfectly in the slot to take the relay
from Jason Rutledge and Ryan
Chamney. He made no mistake
with his shot as Blyth opened up a 4
-Olead. Ripley finally got on the
scoreboard but Blyth got that goal
back 16 seconds later. Benjie
Hakkers sent Brian McNichol
through on another breakaway and
a devastating wrist shot by Brian
dented the mesh behind a startled
goalie.
The second period ended 6 - 1 as
Ryan Chamney carried the puck
from deep in his own end, down the
ice and put a hard shot on the
Ripley net that the goalie stopped.
However, he couldn’t control the
rebound and an opportunistic
Jason Rutledge stuffed the re
bound home for his second goal of
the contest.
Goal number seven for Blyth
opened the scoring in the third
period as Scott Arthur scored on an
goalmouth scramble with assists
being credited to Brian McNichol
and Benjie Hakkers. Ripley notch
ed their second goal of the game
but Blyth responded with three
goals in the final three minutes to
humble Ripley with a 10 - 2
triumph.
Brian McNichol scored his se
cond of the game as he won a
face-off outside the Ripley zone.
He carried the puck through the
defenders and he made another
nice wrist shot count on this
unassisted tally.
Less than a minute later,
defenceman Peter Craig swung
back into action as he put on a
fantastic display of puck-handling
skills on another impressive rink
length dash which ended once
again with the small, black, rubber
disc lying on the ice behind the
Ripley netminder.
The final goal of the game came
in the final minute. Ryan Chamney
stole the puck from the Ripley
defence inside the Ripley zone and
put a shot on net. The goalie made
the stop but the puck lay in the
crease for what seemed an etern-
■ ity. Henry Bos could sense that a
hat-trick was near and he dove for
thepuckand poked it across the
goal line with his stick. This ended
another solid team effort of a 10 - 2
win as Frederick Datema and
Shawn Hakkers played a very solid
defensive game to continuously
frustrate the Ripley offence.
Goal tender MikedeJongand
Chris Lee played exceptionally
well between the pipes as they
made some very key saves to
preserve early Blyth leads. Let’s
hope this togetherness continues
as two more games are scheduled
this week. On Wednesday, Febru
ary 11, the Hensail novices are
coming to town for a mid-week
exhibition match up. Then on
Saturday, February 14 the A-Team
travels to Mitchell to complete the
team ’ s regular schedule in what no
doubtwillbe a Valentine’s Day
heart stopper.
attacker we failed to score as their
goalie frustrated our every at
tempt.
In regular season play the team,
continues undefeated as they;
pummelled Belgrave in a double
header Saturday morning and
afternoon. Despite Belgrave scor
ing first in both games (Mark and
Brad Robinson traded goals and
assists) Brussels rolled up scores of
9 - 1 and 6 - 1. Further evidence of
the balance and spirit of this team
is that virtually every member
tallied a goal or an assist over the
two games.
Wallace comes to Brussels on
Friday night for the second last
regular season game. On Sunday,
the team clambers aboard the
booster bus to do battle in the
Williamsford tournament.
Man hurt
in Belgrave
crash
A 72-year-old man was injured in
a car-truck collision in Belgrave on
February 2 which totalled the car
and caused more than $16,000
damage to a tractor-trailer.
According to the Wingham OPP,
Harold Whitehead of Scott St.,
Wingham, was northbound on
Hwy. 4, travelling in the centre of
the highway, when the trucker,
Robert Grey, 36, of Hanover,
travelling south, braked to avoid a
collision.
The Canada Packers (Walker
ton) transport slid to the east
shoulder of the highway, jack-knif
ed, and struck a snowbank on the
west side of the road. Mr.
Whitehead’s 1978 stationwagon
collided with the rear end of the
truck trailer.
Mr. Whitehead was taken to
Wingham hospital with minor
injuries, where he is recuperating.
He has been charged with failing to
yield the right of way.
