Brussels Bulls on a slide
BY LOIS McARTER
The Junior team travelled to
Lucan on Wednesday night for a
mid-week game.
Lucan claimed the first period of
play scoring the unanswered
goals. All three goals were scored
from direct shots at the face-offs.
Lucan scored their fourth goal a
minute into the second period of
play. It was mid-way through the
period before Brussels finally got
on the scoreboard when Mike
Chapman scored from Kevin Rut
tan and Kevin Lee.
Todd Hutton scored from Tim
Fritz with three minutes remaining
to end the second period at 4 - 2 for
the home team.
The teams had played two
minutes of the third period when

LOSE TO EXETER
They travelled back to Exeter in
some rather adverse weather on
Friday night to play the Hawks.
Dave Harding scored unassisted
five minutes into the game to give
Brussels the lead.
Play continued until the 3:43
mark when Exeter scored the tying
goal. Brussels came back to take
the lead at 2:23 when Kevin
McArter scored from Marty Rut
ledge and Blake Flett.
Twenty seconds into the second
period Marty Rutledge scored

add to their lead.
That lasted until 7:57 when
Exeter scored and then repeated
the play at 5:25 to end the second
period in a 3 - 3 tie.
The Bulls, usually a strong third
period team, just didn’t have the
legs in this game and allowed
Exeter to score two goals early in
the period. Kevin Ruttan scored
from Kevin Lee at 6:19 to complete
the Bull’s scoring for the night and
gave Exeter the opportunity to
score one more goal to get their 6 - 4
victory and their first win of the
season against Brussels.
The Bulls were at home to the
Mitchell Hawks on Sunday after
noon.
Mitchell scored the only goal of
the period taking a 1-0 lead after
having out-shot the Bulls 16-13.

McArter scoring at 14:21 on a pass

Hutton. Tim Fritz scored minutes

couldn’t beat the hot glove of the
Mitchell goalie.
Mitchell came out on top of the
score getting three unanswered
goals in the third period to win the
game 5 - 2.
The Bulls will be back in Mitchell
on Tuesday night to play hockey.
They will be at home to Exeter on
Friday night at 9 p.m. and to
Mitchell on Saturday night at 7
p.m. for a cancelled game from two
weeks ago. They will be in Seaforth
on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. for a
hectic week of hockey.
There has been much controver
sy lately about cleaning up hockey
in the junior ranks. Well after
having accompanied a local hoc
key player to University Hospital in
London on Wednesday night in
severe pain, I heartily agree.
I then witnessed two more
Brussels players leaving Sunday
afternoon’s game because of two
more shoulder injuries after hav
ing been taken heavily into the
boards. Yes, 1 agree it has to be
cleaned up but let’s start with the
officiating. If the games were all
called equally by the officials, the
majority oftheseinjurieswould not
happen. A good clean body check
on the ice very seldom hurts
anyone, but this stuff against the
boards has to stop.
The Bulls weekly lottery draw of
$50 was won by Pat Melady of
Seaforth. The regular 50-50 draw
was shared by Jack Fischer of
Mitchell and Dave Hastings, Brus
sels.
