Tykes try hard but lose 5-4 BY BRENDA BURKHOLDER Blyth Tykes travelled to Hensail Saturday for a game. Blyth played a good game against a strong Hensail team, with only nine players and goal tender, Shane Burkholder. A few minutes into the first period Hensall had a shot on net but was stopped by the Blyth goalie. A minute later Jeff Cowan got a breakaway and scored the first goal of the game. Hensall tried again but again was stopped by Shane in net. With six minutes remaining in first period Amanda Anderson shot the puck on Hen­ sail’s net, but it skimmed by the goal post. Another attempt was made by Jeff Cowan but was stopped by Hensall’s goalie. With Novices tune up for playoffs BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth novice A-team had a single exhibition matchup sche­ duled last week as they hosted a very disciplined squad from Rip­ ley. Blyth played a strong game before finally sucumbing to a third period rally by Ripley and losing by a 5 - 3 score. Chris Lee played a strong game between the pipes as colleague Mike de Jong decided to foresake his usual goaltending position in this game for the high profile position of centreman. The two teams felt each other out in a scoreless first period before Ripley opened the scoring 1:12 into the second frame. Blyth then took over and scored all three of their goals in the game in less than three minutes. All three Blyth tallies were scored the same way. First of all, Peter Craig found Chris Howson in front of the net and Chris quickly tied the game up. On the nex^ shift, Ryan Chamney Blyth Beginners play first game in Wingham The Blyth Beginners travelled to Wingham to play their first game of the year. In a seesaw battle, Wingham finally came out on top with a 13 - 9 win. Wingham started out strong and jumped into the lead, as the Blyth team seemed a little confused with the different surroundings. Blyth soon got into the game and the first half ended 7 - 6 in favour of Wingham. Again Wingham came out flying in the second half and dominated Blyth Swinging Seniors meet About 40 Blyth Swinging Sen­ iors met in the Memorial Hall on Wednesday, January 28, at two o’clock. After a sing song with Ruby Philp at the piano and Mary Wightman leading, President John Hesselwood conducted a short business period. Nora Kelly reported 54 mem­ bers, but three new ones joined so there are now 57. The Legion and Ladies Auxiliary will entertain seniors at the Legion Hall on Wednesday, March 25. The Spring Rally will be held at the Dashwood Community Centre on Tuesday, April 7. After this business, cards and five minutes left, Greg Blok passed the puck to Jeff Cowan who scored the second goal of the game. With one-and-a-half minutes left in the first period Hensall’s Mark Bell got a breakaway and scored their first goal. The score was now 2-1. The second period began with two attempts on Blyth’snet but was stopped by the defence before they reached the net. Hensall attempted another shot on net but was stopped by Blyth’s goal tender. Jeff Johnston had the puck and passed it to Jeff Cowan who scored his third goal. Aforceful shot by Hensall was stopped by Shane and the puck went flying above the net. With three-and-a- half minutes left in the second period Hensall’s Chris Vones passed the puck to Brock Wiess passed to Henry Bos in the slot and “the Scoring Machine’’ made no mistake in giving Blyth the lead. On the next rush down the ice, Jason Rutledge dug the puck out of the corner, fed an accurate pass in front of the net to Ryan Chamney who easily finished off the scoring play with Blyth’s final goal of the game. Ripley got one goal back before the second period ended and the teams entered the third with Blyth holding a slim 3 - 2lead. Blyth couldn’t hold off this deter­ mined squad from Ripley who scored three unanswered goals in the third period and proudly journeyed home with a come-from- behind 5 - 3 win. The team has an exhibition game against Wingham scheduled this Wednesday, February 4 at 6:30 in Blyth down at the Natural Ice Palace. Fans are most welcome as the various teams head into the play-offs with visions of champion­ ships dancing in their heads. the rest of the game. Members of the Blyth team playing were: Steven Bernard, Jeremey Van Amers- foort, Chris Carter, Jonathan Cucksey, Matt Anderson, Shawn Bromley, Jermey Samples, Joel Arthur, Nathan Shannon, Amanda Anderson and Aaron Bakker. Tyler Stewart and Jamie Black split the goaltending duties. Winners at the games were: Euchre, high lady, Myrtle Vod- den; low lady, Anna de Jong; high man, Jim McCall; low man, Ray Griffiths. Thethird period began with a breakaway by Jeff Ferguson who shot and scored bringing the score 4 - 2. With only nine players to change-off, some players were playing two shifts back to back. Blyth was playing an excellent game, passing the puck to fellow teammatesand matching Hen­ sall’s skills play for play, but they we re getting tired and unable to rest for a few minutes in between line changes. Hensall’s Mark Bell was well rested and ready to go in the third period. He shot on net, but Shane was ready. A minute later he shot again and this time it counted. In front of Blyth’s net, Mark Bell again got the puck from one of the Blyth players. He shot and it sneaked between Shane’s legs for a tie of 4-4. An attempt was made on Hensall’s net by Jeff Cowan but to no avail. Hensall ’ s Regan Neilands passed the puck to his teammate Brock Weiss who shot the puck and scored the deciding goal with only a minute and four seconds left in the game. The Blyth Tykes came home with a defeat of 5 - 4 but with the confidence of knowing they played one of their best games. Tykes swamp Wingham BY BRENDA BURKHOLDER Blyth Tykes hosted an exhibition game against Wingham Thursday. First goal of the game was by J eff Cowan; assisted by Jeff Johnston. Second goal by Darryl Bromley who was assisted by Jeff Cowan. A few minutes later Darryl Bromley scored an unassisted goal followed by an unassisted goal by Jeff Cowan bringing the score to 4 - 0. Darryl Bromley passed the puck to Jeff Ferguson who shot and scored. Only moments later Jeff Ferguson got a breakaway and scored his second goal of the game, bringing the score to 6 - 0. Darryl Bromley scored his third goal seconds later assisted by Jeff Ferguson. The team was working together, doing a superb job passing the puck to their teammates. Defence wasn’t giving Wingham many chances to shoot on net, but when they did, goaltender, Scott Brom­ ley was on his toes stopping the puck before it could count. Six minutes left in the first period, Jeff Cowan scored; assist­ ed by Mark Wilson. Moments later Jeff Cowan got a break away and he scored his fourth goal of the game. The score was now 9 - 0 at the end of the first period. Five minutes into the second period Wingham scored their first and only goal of the game. Another attempt was made on our net but was stopped by Scott. Jeff Cowan got another breakaway and scored his fifth goal of the game. Moments later defenceman, Shane Burkholder shot and scored; assisted by Jason Badley. The score was now 11-1. Entering into the third period, Darryl Bromley scored an unassis­ ted goal making this his fourth goal of the game. Numerous attempts were made on the Blyth net but with no luck. Six minutes left in the game Shane Burkholder scored his second goal of the game; assisted by Mark Wilson. Less than two minutes remaining Amanda An­ derson scored her first goal; assisted by Jason Badley. The final scored was 14 - 1 for Blyth.
