Changing name is optional For a woman, getting married traditionally meant giving up her maiden name in favour of her husband’s. Nowadays, that’s just one of the options. Legally in Canada, a woman can choose for herself whether to adopt a new name or keep her old one. She can also choose to be Ms. or Miss at work, and Mrs. at home. The bride does not have to take any legal action in order to retain her own name. She can continue to remain Mary Jones simply by using the name. But an increasing ly popular option is to retain the maiden name at work, especially for professional women, but to adopt the married name in private life. Both are legal, as long as one has dual identification, such as a birth certificate and a marriage license. Another option is for both husband and wife to hyphenate their names. The couple may decide to become Mary Smith- Jones and John Smith-Jones. Put his or her name first, depending on which way sounds better. Again, no legal procedure is required, and if there are children, they can either use the hyphenated name, or pick one last name. Whatever is decided about names, if a change is called for, the documents thatneedattention are: driver’s licence, car registration, Social Insurance card, income tax form, passport, bank accounts, credit cards, insurance policies, school and employer records, and postal address. With all the choices avialable, it is only good manners to let friends know what to call you, by sending ‘ ‘ at home ’ ’ cards with the wedding announcements. The card is de signed to make it clear how the bride wishes to be addressed.
