Fans saw a real cliffhanger last Wednesday at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre when the home-town Midgets did battle with the Howick team | in white]. The Howick boys looked as if they had the game tied up, until the last few minutes of the third period, when Brussels surged back, scoring a goal in the last 14 seconds of play to finish in a 5-5 tie. Above, it’s a near miss as the Howick goalie deflects the puck just past the net. On Monday night a three-goal per formance by Brett Clarkson lead the team to a 5 - 0 trouncing in Belmore. The Harriston tournament was opened this weekend with a game against a stubborn Mount Forest team which subsequently won the consolation championship. Goals by Todd Machan, Greg Fritz and Matt Lee produced a 3 - 0 win. Steady consistent play defeated Harriston 4 - 0 later that afternoon as Wayne Alexander tallied twice with Ryan Finch and Brett Clark son each getting one. Sunday afternoon against Pal merston the boys got it into second gear steadily piled up eight goals while the defence shut down any effort to counter. Jason Kieffer recorded his fourth straight shut out. Brett Clarkson opened the scoring and later added two assists. Ryan Finch and Wayne Alexander each scored once with two assists. Greg Fritz added two goals and Matt Lee had a hat trick. The championship game reveal ed that team has good reason to call themselves the “incredible” atoms as met and defeated a strong Howick team. Constant forecheck ing, six-man defence and fast offensive breakout led to a goal from the point by Todd Machan assisted by Brett Clarkson before the end of the first period. After being stymied by the Howick goalie’s butterfly style Matt Lee struck twice to the high right hand corner assisted by Tim Machan, Brad Beuermann and Brett Clark son. Howick replied with two minutes left in the period, but Todd Machan fed Matt Lee one more time to close the period. Brett Clarkson, Wayne Alexander and Matt Lee combined for the fifth goal. Perhaps the only defensive lapse of game permitted a final goal by Howick with 17 seconds remain ing. The boys were generously prais ed by the tournament organizers fortheir determined, hard skating, disciplined hockey as they accept ed the championship trophy.
