Sports Rutledge scores 2 hat-tricks as Bulls win, lose, draw BY LOIS McARTER The Brussels Juniors played three games this past week. Tuesday night saw them in Seaforth against the Centennaires. More than half the first period was played before Tim Fritz scored the opening goal for Brussels but just 39 seconds later, Seaforth tied the score. Marty Rutledge, Tim Fritz and Kevin Ruttan combined to put the Bulls ahead at 5:02 and hold a 2 -1 lead at the end ofthe first period. Fritz. Paul Robinson, and Rut­ ledge added to that lead early in the second but Seaforth came back and scored three quick goals in a span of four minutes to take a one goal lead. Rutledge assisted by Fritz and Blake Flett scored at 5:41 to tie the score at 4 to end the second period. Fritz, Kevin Ruttan and Rut­ ledge combined once more to put Brussels back in the lead. There was 8:34 left in the period when Seaforthscoredtotie the game. They scored the go-ahead goal at 4:05 and then scored the last goal in an empty net when Brussels pulled the goalie in an attempt to tie the score. Seaforthclaimedthe 7 - 5 victory. The Bulls travelled to Mitchell on Friday night to play the Hawks. Marty Rutledge opened the scor­ ing three minutes into the game. Mitchell scored at the 9:15 mark and added the leading goal at 15:11 and have a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period. Tim Fritz assisted by Rutledge and Mike Chapman scored early to tie the score. Mitchell added two more goals before Fritz, Rutledge and Ruttan combined to come within one at the end of the second period. Mitchell added two more goals in the first half of the third period. Brussels seemed to re-group with Marty Rutledge, Tim Fritz and Doug Taylor scoring at 11:29 of the period. Just two minutes later Rob Cardiff scored from Fritz and Mike Vincent, with Vincent scoring unassisted at 15:24 to tie the score. Just 22 seconds later Marty Rutledge scored from Mike Chap­ man and Kevin Ruttan for the go-ahead goal and his hat-trick. The Bulls allowed Mitchell to score at the 18:47 mark to end the game in a 7 - 7 tie. ALL-STAR GAME A good representation travelled to Lucan on Saturday night to enjoy a 5 p.m. dinner and the all-star game at 7 p.m. The northern stars were not allowed to shine too much this year and were defeated 9 - 3 by the south for the first time in several years. Each player partici­ pating received a hockey sweater with his name on it. Those taking part from Brussels were Tim Fritz, Kevin McArter, Kevin Lee and goalie Jeff McGavin. BEATEXETER Sunday afternoon had the Bulls at home to the Exeter Hawks. Brussels opened the scoring at 15:46 with Marty Rutledge scoring from Kevin McArter and Paul Robinson. Exeter came back to score three unanswered goals and take a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period. Brussels came out strong early in the second to score three goals. Kevin Ruttan scored a minute and 12 seconds into the period from Marty Rutledge and Rob Cardiff. Rutledge assisted by Mike Chap­ man and Paul Robinson scored the second goal to tie the game at three. Kevin McArter scored from Tim Fritz, a short-handed goal, to put Brussels in the lead. Exeter came back at 7:13 to tie the game again. Marty Rutledge scored his hat- trick from Fritz at 4:05 to put Brussels ahead once more, but Exeter tied the score again with only 2:41 remaining, leaving the second period in a 5 - 5 tie. Defenceman Rob Cardiff made his way down the ice and scored after receiving the puck from goalie Pat Chambers to put the Bulls ahead by one. At 10:38 of the period Marty Rutledge scored from Murray Houghton and Kevin McArter for an insurance marker. The Bulls were able to keep the Hawks off the scoreboard and claim the 7 - 5 victory. It was quite obvious that Exeter was so busy covering Kevin McArter that they forgot about his linemate Marty Rutledge who scored four goals in the game. The team will be travelling to Clinton on Friday night at 8:30 and will be travelling to Mt. Brydges on Sunday. Crusaders split games on weekend The Crusaders travelled to St. Clements on Friday night for a good close game of hockey. Brian Hastie scored for Brussels on a pass from Mike Watson at 17:32 only to have St. Clements come back and tie the score at 16:09. Brian Hastie scored again at 15:12 from brother Kevin and Peter Bennett. Scoring slowed down until 2:04 when St. Clements managed to tie the score once more. Ken Cousins and Dave Stephenson combined to go ahead with a 3 - 2 lead at 1:54 to end the period. Scoring slowed considerably in the second with St. Clements getting the only goal of the period to tie the score once more. St. Clements scored two early goals in the third period just 40 seconds apart to take the lead. Brussels managed to get on the scoreboard just once more at 3:48 when Dave Montgomery scored from Ken Cousins and Dave Stephenson. St. Clements claimed the 5 - 4 victory. BEAT ARTHUR 8 -1 The Crusaders were at home to Arthur on Sunday night and Outstanding young skaters Peter MacDonald of RR 3, Brussels and Kerrie Shepherd of RR 1, Bly th placed second in the Novice Dance category to take the silver medal at the Central Canada Divisional Figure Skating Championships in Brandon, Manitoba last week. At the same competition, Kevin Wheeler of RR 5, Brussels and his partner Michelle Menzies won the gold medal in the Junior Free Skating Pairs Competition. Both couples now advance to the Canadian National Championships in Ottawa February stock-piled some goals. Dave Montgomery scored early from Jim Campbell and Mike Watson to start the ball rolling. The period was almost over when Kevin Deitner assisted by Ken Higgins and Jim Campbell scored the second goal. The second period had Dave Montgomery and Kevin Deitner scoring in the first five minutes with assists going to Gerry Wheel­ er and Rob Core and Ken Cousins. Play continued until 4:42 when Dave Stephenson and Ken Cousins combined for the fifth goal. Jim Campbell scored from Kevin Deit­ ner and Brian Tenpas at 2:51 with only 36 seconds remaining when Gerry Wheeler scored from Mont­ gomery and Campbell, for the fifth goal of the period. Jim Campbell, Dave Montgom­ ery and Gerry Wheeler clicked again for Brussels’ only goal of the third period at 17:36. Arthur got their only goal of the game at 10:46 which spoiled goalie Keith Mc­ Clure’s shut-out. The Intermediates will be play­ ing at home for a rare Tuesday night encounter against Drayton. They will be at home to Monk ton on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
