It was an exciting hockey weekend for sports fans. Sorry all the activities took place in Exeter and Milverton and many of the faithful followers didn’t get to enjoy it. The Junior team were in Exeter for the annual tournament held by the Hawks. Ithasbeenafullslateof eight teams in the past but only five teams responded thisyear and so it was set up as a round-robin with total goals to count if a tie resulted. Lucan received a bye in the first round and Exeter defeated Thed- ford8-2 on Friday night. The Bulls played their first game Saturday at 5p.m. against Tavistock. Tavi­ stock scored the only goal of the first period to take a 1 - 0 lead. After playing four minutes into the second period Doug Shaw scored on apass from Paul Coultes and Ron Chambers to tie the game, but Tavistock came back to tie the game four minutes later. Marty Rutledge scored at 13:48 assisted by Kevin Lee and Tim Fritz to tie the score once more. Tavistock wasn’t giving up and scored the go-ahead goal with five minutes left in the period and held the lead for the remainder of the period. Brussels re-grouped in the third period and came back to tie the game at 4:01 into the period. Tim Fritz scored on a pass from Marty Rutledge and Kevin Ruttan. Kevin Johnston scored the go-ahead goal at 12:15 assisted by Paul Robinson and MikeChapman. Marty Rut­ ledge and Tim Fritz combined to add an insurance marker a minute later and the Bulls hung on for the 5 - 3 victory. Goalie Jeff McGavin who came up with some great saves was awarded Most Valuable Player of the game award for the Brussels team. BIG COMEBACK The Bulls returned to Exeter on Sunday fortheir second game of the tournament at noon. Their opposition was the Lucan Irish. Kevin Lee assisted by Mike Chapman opened the scoring for Brussels five minutes into the period. Lucan tied the score at the 10:06 mark. Lucan added two more goals at 6:24and4:49totakea3-1 lead, but Brussels battled back with Mike Vincent scoring from Kevin John­ ston and Kevin Lee at 4:15. Kevin McArter scored from Tim Fritzat2:21 totie the score and end the period at 3 - 3. In the second period it looked like the Bulls couldn’t do anything right. Lucan scored four unansw­ ered goals in the first 11 minutes of the period to take a resounding 7 - 3 lead. Goalie PatChambers pulled himself and was replaced by Jeff McGavin for the remainder of the period and the game. After the second break the team seemed to re-group. Kevin McArt­ er scored just 16 seconds into the third period on a pass from Kevin Lee and Tim Fritz. Kevin added his third goal on a pass from Marty Rutledge just 25 seconds later. Goal number four for Kevin came at 15:38 from Kevin Lee to bring the score within one. Marty Rutledge scored on a pass from Brian Campbell to tie the score at 7 at 12:26 mark. Kevin McArter scored unassisted at 6:09 to give Brussels the lead in this heart-stopping game. Marty Rut­ ledge assisted by Kevin McArter added another goal for Brussels at the 2:26 mark. After being shut-out for six straight goals Lucan came back to score with 1:58 remaining. They added the tying goal just 41 seconds later to force overtime. A five minute sudden-death overtime period was to be played to The Brussels Bulls came through in fine style last weekend, by winning the annual hockey tournament hosted by the Exeter Hawks in Exeter. End-to-end super hockey was played until Kevin McArter scored his sixth goal on a pass from Marty Rutledge at 3:12 of the overtime to claim the victory for Brussels. The spectators were exhausted as the players must have been after suchaconcentratedeffort. This win put the team into the cham- pionshipgameat6p.m. against the home-town Exeter Hawks. The M.V.P. of the game for Brussels was awarded to Kevin McArter. EXETER IN FINAL League games between these two teams have been rugged all season and this game was to be no different. After such an exhausting game earlier in the day for the Bulls and Exeter coming in for their first game of the day, the out-come didn’t look good but the fans did their utmost in supporting the team in their vocal exuberance. It looked like the Hawk’s fresh legs were going to walk all over the Bulls, but Brian Campbell scored at 7:22 from Kevin Ruttan for Brussels’ first goal. Exeter added another goal at 4:07 to go ahead by a 3-1 score. Kevin Lee whistled a shot past the goalie from the point to bring Brussels within one goal and end the first period. The second period had Brian Campbell scoring from Blake Flett atl4:14totiethegame. End-to- end action continued with only 30 seconds remaining in the period when Blake Flett scored from Brian CampbelltogiveBrusselsa4 - 3 lead at the end of the second period. Ten minutes, forty-six seconds were played in the third period before Kevin McArter scored from Marty Rutledge for an insurance goal. McArter scored again at 7:16 from Rutledge and Tim Fritz to add to the Brussels lead. Both teams lined up on their respective blue lines for presenta­ tions. M.V.P. of the game for Brussels was awarded to Kevin McArter. The Most Valuable Player award for the best goalie in the tournament was presented to the Brussels’ goalie Jeff McGavin. The M.V.P. award for the best player of the tournament was also claimed by Brussels and was presented to Kevin McArter. Captain Tim Fritz accepted the championship banner for the team victory. Each participating player was presented with a gold medal­ lion. The Bulls will be playing in Seaforth on Tuesday night, in Mitchell on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. and at home on Sunday at 2 p.m. to the visiting Exeter Hawks. The team will also be participat­ ing in the annual all-star game being played in Lucan on Saturday night at 7 p.m. Jan. lOwhenthe north plays the south.
