The Citizen, 1987-01-07, Page 13THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7, 1987. PAGE 13. Cowan, Haggitt lead Blyth Tykes to victory BY KATHY BROMLEY Last Tuesday evening, the Blyth Tykes played their final game for 1986, with another win to their credit. The game was on home ice, with Zurich visiting. Coach Barry Brom ley alternated the goalies, giving everyone a chance on both the ice and in the net. This seems to work well, with no one specifically being left with all the duties and tension that a goalie faces in the net. Within the first minute of play, Blyth took numerous shots on Zurich’s net, but unfortunately, none counted, as their goalie was obviously on his toes. His endur ance level was finally met, when Blyth’s first goal was scored at the minute and a half mark, by Michael Haggitt, with Jeff Cowan assisting him. Blyth’s first line didn’t allow Zurich one chance to shoot at their net in the first three minutes of play! The puck was kept in Zurich’s end throughout that time. The next line change told a different story, though, as Zurich then went to work to tie up the score. They were determined to take the lead, but with the excellent work displayed by Darryl Bromley he caught up to this opponent on a breakaway and foiled an attempt to score. This obviously got the team sizzling, for only seconds later, Jeff Ferguson scored an unassisted goal. Only 39 seconds later, Jeff Cowan earned his first goal of the day. “Sparky” Mark Wilson assis ted him on his goal, making it 3 - 1 for Blyth. Before the change of lines, Jeff tucked the puck away again, only 25 seconds later, for a 3 goal lead. For the remaining eight minutes of the first period, neither team was able to score. Greg Blok made an excellent stop on one of Zurich’s shots, which could have closed the gap. Zurich’s next attempt was one that was so close, that even the players had mistaken it to be a goal, as sticks were being held high and sounds of cheers were being heard. But the puck had hit the post and ricocheted backout again. Corey Shannon’s hockey capa bilities were shown in the beginn ing of the second period, when he was able to stop Zurich on. a breakaway, stealingthe puck at Blyth’s blueline and hustling back to Zurich’s end to score. Corey had started something thatthe team was catching onto quickly, as the team was obviously becoming partial to the blueline. Only 35 seconds later, Michael Haggitt took the puck in from the blueline to score his second goal of the evening, with Corey assisting him. Zurich came to life three minutes later, to mark their second goal for the evening. The score was then 7 - 2 in favor of Blyth at this time. This obviously brought out the determination in Michael Haggitt to keep the margin between them. In less than one minute, he scored twice! Assisting Michael on his first goal was Jeff Cowan and Corey Shannon, while Mark Wil son was his helper for the second goal. The next shift was a partner combination of skills in hockey shown by Jeff Cowan and Darryl Bromley. These boys worked together, passing the puck to Zurich’s end and put the puck where it counts four times. Each skated and stick handled the puck to perfection, with Jeff putting tne rinismng touches on each time to score. With seven minutes remaining inthegame, Zurichscoredtheir third and final goal of the game. The statistics for the evening were Jeff Cown, 7 goals, 2 assists; Michael Haggitt, 4 goals and 1 assist; Corey Shannon, 1 goal, 2 assists; Jeff Ferguson, 1 goal; Darryl Bromley, 4 assists and “Sparky” Wilson, 2 assists. The final score was Blyth 13, Zurich 3. On Saturday, the boys travelled to Huron Park, to start the year off right with another win in their favor. Again, they faced a goalie who was as alert as Blyth was determin ed. JeffCowan attempted three different times to score. With the pressure being put forth, not to speak of Jeff’s endurance, one finally went in to open the books for Blyth. Darryl Bromley then set “Sparky” Wilson up in front of the netforagoal. The next goal was earned by Jeff Cowan, coming in from the blueline. With 19 seconds left in the first period, Huron Park scored to make it 3 - 1 in Blyth’s favor, at the end of the first period. Early in the second period, Huron Park fought back and scored on a breakaway. Within a minute of that goal, though, dependable Jeff Cowan scored again. But, Huron Park wouldn’t give in either, scoring again, closing our lead to 4 - 3. “Sparky” Mark Wilson then came to the rescue as he n+temptedabreakawaygoal, buthis il. "t attempt was unsuc cessful. Then, e.Jy seconds later, the puck came out in tro^t of Huron Park’s net where Mark was located and he scored! Huron Park would- n’tgive up, though, as they scored again as the puck was loose in Blyth end. The boys then got down to real business and decided this was enough of this kind of play. Jeff Cowan made another attempt to score but the goalie stopped it. But Jeff was able to keep track on the puck and tucked it in for his fourth goal of the day. The game was like a teeter-totter, as Huron Park came back to score again, making it 6 - 5 for Blyth. Corey Shannon then displayed his nifty stick work and came around from behind Huron Park’s net and planted the puck in to score. Jeff Cowan got back into action, making the first attempt in front of the net, as the goalie made the save. Jeff then pushed in the rebound, giving Blyth a 8 - 5 lead. Seconds later, after a save was made in Blyth’s net, Jeff skated away to place the puck securly in Huron Park’s net again. Michael Haggitt made two attemps on goal, following Jeff’s goal, and put his second shot in to make the final score 10 - 5 in Blyth ’ s favor. Jeff Cowan earned six of the 10 goals; with Sparky Wilson getting two goals while Corey Shannon and Michael Haggitt shared a goal each. The Tykes will be hosting Bayfield on Saturday at 10 a.m. This will be followed by the Novice “B” team playing Bayfield as well at 11 a.m. NOVICE “B” The Novice “B” team, under the coaching of Wayne McDougall started their 1987 year off with a very close game, but, unfortunate ly, close doesn’t count. Saturday morning they played hosts to the remaining Novice team from Goderich (not the same team as they defeated last week) who took the lead in the game by the end of the first period, Blyth then came toaction, when Darryl Shannon took the puck from behind Blyth’s net and then fled up the ice to Goderich’s end and placed the puck neatly into their net, closing the gap to a lead of 2 - 1 for Goderich. The opposition then got down to action and scored on goalie, Chris Bromley, for the third and last time of the game. Brad Anderson then earned an unassisted goal, bringing the score back to 3-2. With three minutes left in the game, each team tried hard to score, but were unable to accomplish that feat. Goderich went home with a victory of 3 - 2 over Blyth. The Novice “B” team takes on Bayfield this Saturday in Blyth arena at 11 a.m Vercruyssen to play in Canada Games Continued from page 1 provinces in the Winter Games, the youths on the team are highly visible to international coaches, and could become indentified as national team members in the near future.
