Over, 300 people attended the evening which commenced with a social hour from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by a barbecued beef smorgasbord dinner under the direction of Ernest Ackert of Hol yrood • Joe Agnew, president of the Lucknow and District Lions Club, acted as chairman for the evening. The head table members were piped in by Frank MacKenzie of Kinloss, and included Lions offic- ers, past presidents and their wives over the 20 year history of the club and widows of past presidents. The banquet was preceded by 0 Canada, a Toast to the Queen and Girl Guide From England Visiting Here Judith Armitage, 15, of Shef- field, Yorkshire, England is visiting for a week with 15-year-old Susan Thompson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Thompson of Lucknow. The visit is part of an Interna- tional Girl Guide Camp which will be held this year in Canada on Cape Breton Island. The visit provides for girls from many countries of the world to spend a week in the home of a Canadian Girl Guide prior to attending camp. Susan met Judith in Toronto on Monday where she had arrived by plane with other Guides from Great Britain. Judith, Susan and Lorna Boyle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Boyle of Lucknow,,, will attend the International Camp at Cape Bret- on, travelling by air from toronto on Wednesday of next week. Nursing Grad MARIE BOYLE Marie Boyle, daughter of Mr.. and Mrs. Cyril Boyle of St. Augustine, graduated on June 30 from the Fanshawe College School of Nursing, St. Joseph's Campus. She is a graduate of St. Joseph's, Kingsbridge and Goderich District Collegiate Institute. the singing of the Lions Grace. Bell, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. MacLean Bell (Jean Bissett), of Rothesay, New Bruns- wick received his bachelor of arts degree, with a major in economics, during commencement exercises at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. on June 16th. David will attend Montreal Canadiens Hockey Camp in Sept- ember. Vacation Nears Vacation time is fast approaching at The Lucknow Sentinel. Receives 'Award Of $1000 The general meeting of the Leonard Foundation has granted an award to Russell Moncrief in the sum of $1,000.00 tenable at University of Guelph for the scholastic year 1977-78. Russell will enter his final year in Veterinary. Medicine• this Septem- ber. Russell is the sop of Mr. and Mrs. George Moncrief of Amber- ley. He is presently employed for the summer with Dr. Donald Hodgins of Ripley. During the past year, the Lucknow and District Leo Club has been raising money through dances and various fund raising projects. Their initial community service work project was to make imprOve- ments at the community swimming pool. In late June, the efforts of their year's work was realized. As well as buying several shrubs and having Huron Landscaping arrange them, they contracted the Lucknow Machine Shop to supply and install railings for the front steps. Leo PRESENTATION HONOURS CHARTER PRESIDENT The late Rae J. Watson was the Charter President and was highly responsible for the formation of Lucknow and District Lions Club To Officially Open Senior Citizens Home Opening ceremonies for the first senior citizen residence built by Ontario Housing Corporation (OHC) in Lucknow will be held July 15 at 11.00 a.m. The 20-unit, two-storey resid- ence, located on Walter Street, was designed by D. C. Stevens, Architect, of London, and built by Don Riehl Construction Ltd. of New Hamburg. Total cost for the project was $372,069. The residence will serve Luck- now and the townships of Ashfield, West Wawanosh and Kinloss. At the present time, the' building houses 24' residents. Representatives from the provin- cial and. federal governments and the above municipalities will attend the opening. Dr. Albert Rose, a member of the OHC board of directors will represent the provin- cial Ministry of Housing. member Mike McDonagh painted the sign now hanging over the front door. Lucknow Cycle and Garden Shop are in the final steps of completing two bicycle 'stands ordered by the Leos. Directly to the south of the pool, the Leos purchased two pieces of playground equipment from Paris Playgrounds of Paris, Ontario. The one piece is a round-a-bout and the other is a combination climber slide. It is hoped that these will be of great assistance to the play- ground staff. Leo members Lynn twenty years ago. In his memory, at the anniver- sary banquet on Saturday, Mrs. Rae (Edna) Watson presented to the Lucknow Club a stand carrying a miniature flag of all the countries The July meeting of West Wawanosh Township Council took place on Tuesday, July 5, in the office of the Public Works Garage. All members attended, with Reeve Lyons presiding. The minutes of the regular June meeting and a special session were read and adopted on motion of Councillors Hickey and Foran. Two trustees and the' clerk from the Police Village of Manchester (Auburn) attended the meeting and discussion took place concerning dogs and the street lights in the village. The clerk was directed to' write the Community Renewal Branch, Ministry of Housing to ascertain what assistance may be available to help the village pay for replacing the street .lights. The lights (or lack of lights) in the hamlet of Dungannon were Elphick and Pam McIntosh, backed up by other club members, are in charge of the playground run in conjunction with the swimming lessons provided in the mornings. These improvements represent a lot of hard work by the young people of this community. Close to $2,000.00 was spent at the pool. The Leo Club has enjoyed a great sense of community service work through this project as well as gaining the valuable experience of doing something for' others that they will carry with them into the various adult service, groups. where Lions Clubs serve.
