The Lucknow Sentinel, 1977-07-06, Page 1he LUCKNOIN SENTINEL $10 A Year In Advance 514 To U.S.A. and Foreign WEDNESDAY, JULY 6, 1977 Single Copy 25c 20 Pages North Road Reconstruction In 1977 Cancelled Under New Committee Editorial Comment . . . Residents of Kinloss and Luck- now are gradually realizing that a further planned construction pro- gram for the Bruce Coinity road running north from • Lucknow, originally scheduled for this year, has been cancelled in favour ,of. other work. A budget of $80,000 to $100,000 for reconstruction of the short piece of road frOM Lucknow north to the railroad tracks, and from Holyrood north as far as funds would allow, has been cancelled out of the current year's work. Taxpayers in Lucknow and Kinloss, as well as the travelling public, have been waiting a long time for a deCent county road linking Highway 86 at Lucknow to Highway 9 at Kinloss. It has been unfortunately known as one ,of the worst pieces of county road in Ontario, and the potential traffic on it has warranted action. Representations have been made to the county by individuals and municipalities on several occasions in years past. Finally, after a long wait, which is understandable considering the demands for funds and the restrictions on spending, the road was put on the reconstruction list for the county to be done in stages by county employees. The first section completed was from the CNR north to the 4th concession corner. The second stage was from the 4th north to the 8th corner at Holyrood. The county employees did all the rebuilding of the road and did an excellent job. It is a fine piece of reconstruction work. ' But this appears to be where the project has ended this year. Leo Murray of Kinloss was a' member of the Bruce county Road committee for a 3 year term, having been elected by county council. When Reeve of Kinloss, Leo completed two of these years, but when he was defeated as Reeve of Kinloss in the election late last year, he ' was not eligible to complete his final year on the county road committee. Leo would have served as chairman of this county committee in 1977, a post which goes to the man serving his third year. John MacKenzie, Reeve of Bruce Township, was elected to fill the one year vacancy on Mr. Murray's term and Mr. MacKenzie became. chairman of the committee for 1977. Mac Metcalf, Reeve of Carrick Township, is serving his second year in the three year term. Floyd Weick, Reeve of Kincardine, was the newly elected county road committee member in 1977 and is in his first year of a 3 ,year term. Under this committee, the road program scheduled for Lucknow north, was cancelled in 1977. Our readers can draw their own conclusions, we certainly have drawn ours.
