impressed By Visit To Canada
A.
Several Lions Club members and
wives from California recently
visited in the Lucknow area with
members of Lucknow Lions Club
and their wives.
June Decker, one of the U.S.
visitors, wrote the following in their
club bulletin upon return from the
Canadian visit.
By June Decker
MONDAY - April 11
Our trip began with a four day
visit at Jackson Point, Ontario in
the home of a young Canadian'man
who had lived with us about five
years ago. When he "departed"
from Santa Maria he -was on his
way to be married. They now have
two little girls, 3 years and
months, so needless to say was a
special treat to be with them all.
While there we toured Toronto;
highlight of this day was going up
into the tallest building in the
world, the CN Tower, which took us
1400 plus feet above sea level (in 60
seconds) and then another 300 plus
feet if you wished We had a nice
day for this excursion, so a
beautiful view of the city.
FRIDAY, APRIL 15
We returned to Toronto Airport
for the meeting of Frank Flory and
Evelyn and and Dawson Manville
(Orcutt Lions) flight from Los
Angeles - 6.30 p.m. Toronto time,
and to be met by Lu,cknow Lions. A
grand reunion for us at the airport
becausethe four Lions that picked
us up were part of the group that
visited Santa Maria a year ago
April! We proceeded to Owen
Sound, a trip •that took until 9.30
p.m. Hospitality room awaited our
• arrival. This is where it all began,
the impression of being on one
continuous party!!!
The friendliness of all those
Canadian Lions still overwhelm use
(We had the opportunity of
meeting about 60 of them at the
International Convention in Hawaii
last summer so consequently it was
like "Old Home" week for many
toward us.)
This was District A-9's first
convention from being split from
District A-15. They are run most
similar to our own Districts. A few
word changes, as their meetings
are called "rallies", etc. It seemed
everyones room was open for
hospitality, it flowed abundatly!
SUNDAY, APRIL 17
Afternoon adjournment of Dist-
rict A-9 Convention and on .to
Lucknow, about a 2 1/2 hour car ride.
Here we split up into private
homes, Frank going to Marion and
Lorne Cook; Evelyn and Dawson to
Wilma and Grant Chisholm;, and
Carl and I to Barbara and Art
Helms' the first half and Betty and
Barry McDonagh the second half.
This began a whirlwind week!
Monday - Laundry and unwind
day. Pot luck dinner at Chisholms.
Tuesday - Took a drive, saw
Menonite country, etc. Must add
Canada is a beautiful country and
lots of open land. Ladies went •out
to dinner; men attended Palmer-
ston Lions meeting; all met
afterwards for "tunch" (midnight
snack) at Cooks.
Wednesday - Group tour of
Nuclear Plant in. Douglas Point - is
similar to Diable Canyon, only
their's 'is operating besides ex-
panding by two more units.
Evening we were guests of the
Lucknow Lions and Ladies for a
dinner and social. "Lunch at
Helms".
Thursday - Another laundry day
and unwind a wee bit! Late
afternoon, fellows went fishing in a
private trout pond and caught our
dinner! Fish fry held at Lion Earl
Stever's home and his wife Kaye.
Beautiful old stone house , and
being refurbished by them.
Friday - Trip to Niagara Falls -
only bad day of the trip - rained all
the way and very heavy fog at the
falls so couldn't see them. Most
disappointed! (Had 80 degrees day
before). On to Brantford and A-15
Convention.
Friday P.M. - District A-15 held
their "First" District Convention,
from being split, in Brantford.
International Director Zimmerman
was the keynote speaker. This was
a very well run convention, and
those knowing Bruce Murray,
P.D.G., can understand why. He
was Master 'of Ceremonies of the
affair.
A very nice Governors Ball on
Saturday. Our Lions members were
quite impressed with the "rallies"
held here. Competition was more
evident for Deputy District Gover-
nors, etc., which makes for a more
lively convention.
One special highlight was the
attendance of two Lion members
who were blind and they had their
Leader Dogs. Such beautiful dogs,
and the loyalty to each , other just
shone through. It makes you proud
to be involved with this organiza-
tion when you can see where some
of this work leads to. These dogs
were trained in the United States at
the Michigan Leader Dog School
and of course financial aid coming
from Lions. It's great to be a, Lion
and Lioness!!! International Pres-
ident Sabra' is so right - "Make
yOtitfelAM Mart feel needed" - atct_
we are all needed in some way as'
shown here.
We left Brantford on Sunday at
7.00‘ a.m. for the trip to Toronto
Airport - a wee bit bedraggled - but
certainly full of friendship and love
for those fellow Lions and Ladies
from Canada. They all sent their
greetings and were a little disap-
pointed more Santa Marians could-
n't make the trip, as looked forward
to seeing many of you again! BUT,
if all goes well, quite a group plan
on attending the Multi-District
onvention (to be held in Las
Vegas in February) and then
continuing on to visit with us here.
We know our Lions and- Ladies will
welcome them back - and as
warmly as before, 'They, too, were
impressed with the Noontimers
hospitality and still talk about that
visit!
Thir—taii—craTTKItia—"ttut -
very hard to catch it all! The
fellowship of Lionism can't always
be put into words. We do know that
there will always be a special place
in our hearts forever with these
memories just accumulated!!!
