GRADE SIX
FIELD TRIP
On Monday May 9, Mr.
Kummer's grade six class
and the grade fives from Mrs.
Huston's class journeyed by
motor coach to Midhurst and
Midland Ontario.
The bus left the school at 7
a.m. and first travelled to the
Ministry of Natural
Resources Tree Nursery at
Midhurst.
Mr. Groves, the 'superin-
tendent presided over a slide.
presentation which showed
all the aspects of tree
production at the nursery. He
also outlined the history of the
forest station and showed us
where the young trees might
be transplanted. We then
boarded the bus for a guided
tour of the nursery. We
stopped at various locations
while Mr. Groves explained
certain operations •and
features of the nursery. A
highlight of the tour • was a
presentation to our class by
Mr. Groves. Each of us were
given a Norway Spruce tree
to plant when he reached
home. ,
For lunch we went to the
Springwater Provincial Park
directly across the highway
from the nursery/4 Following a
hasty meal the students
rambled about the park. The
many wildlife enclosures'
captivated the pupils
especially the coyote's den.
Then on we went to Midland
to visit the. 17th century
French mission post,' Sainte-
Marie.
Following the film
presentation we walked
through the , reconstructed
mission imagining how it was
like to live in Canada's past.
Within the stockade walls
were examples of Indian
longhouses, wigwams and
other examples of the Huron
c'ultOre.
The tour ended with a walk
through the museum on site
which showed that Europe
was like during the 17th
century. Other exhibits in the
museum outlined the Huron
Indians culture and the ,,teps
in ' reconstructing Sainte-
Mare.
A hungry hunch of pupils
settled into, the hu ,-, and
waited patiently until the
McDonaid's restaurant in
Owen Sound was spotted.
Swift courteous service by the
staff soon satisfied our ap-
petites.
We arrived home at Ripley
by 8:00 p.m., all healthy and
in good spirits. It was a very
rewarding day for all.
Thank-you to the parents
who helped to supervise the
trip, Mrs. Dorothy Needham,
Mrs. Wendy Scott an'd Mrs.
Linda. Linde.
