It was decided to send letters from the group to each of the local candidates in the ' forthcoming provincial elections. He or she will be asked if they favour stricter interpretation of the present abor- tion law to protect the lives of the unborn children. An opinion is also requested concerning the announcement by Marc Lalonde, federal Minister of Health, that he wishes the provinc- es to set up "Women's Clinics' where abortions would be made available. This would certainly lead to a marked increase in the number of abortions performed. Adrian Keet, a farmer from the Wingham area, and past president of the Wingham Voice for Life, completed a ' 350 mile walk to Ottawa in 17 days, in support of Pro "Concern" was the theme of the May meeting of Maitland Presbyterial Society of the WMS of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. It was held on Monday, May 16, in Chalmers Church, Whitechurch. Mrs. Don Ross pre- sided at the organ for the hymns and musical numbers. The meeting opened with in- vocation by Mrs. Don Robertson, president, followed by devotions by the Brussels group. Mrs. Matheson read the scripture, meditation was given by Mrs. Imes, followed by prayer by Mrs. Mair. Mrs. John de Boer welcomed everyone to Chalmers. The minutes of the last meeting were read by Mrs. Ewen MacLean and approved. Mrs. Don MacAdam read the correspondence and the treasurer's report was given. by Mrs. Evan Keith. Rev. Gentle of Southampton brought greetings from Presbytery. A vocal duet by Mrs. H. S. Wardrop and Mrs. William Gib- son was much enjoyed. Honorary membership certifi- cates were presented to Mrs. Lloyd Felker by Mrs. George MacDonald, both of Molesworth, and to Mrs. Don Robertson by Mrs. Tom MacDonald, both of Kinlough. Mrs. Felker and Mrs. Robertson thanked the socieites most graciously. Mrs. J. W. English introduced Frank Whilsmith, guest speaker, telling of his work with the various organizations and the offices he has held. • Mr. Whilsmith took as his topic "Youth", in connection with the theme. He spoke of the chal- le_nges of today's youth, demon- strations, etc., economic freedom and the seeking of religious free- dom. "We must be strong intel- lectually and morally, also in faith and religion," he said. In 70 per cent of the world, socialism is being sought. The speaker praised the great work of the Hollywood Presby- terian Church which sent out 500 to 600young people to witness and tell of the love of Jesus Christ; and made the film, "Living the Jesus Way", which did so much goOd. Mrs. Nugent of Ripley con- ducted the In Memoriam service. The delegates to the Synodical in Stratford, Mrs. Gibson of Molesworth; Mrs. P. Steer, South Kinloss; Mrs. G. Mundell, Blue- vale; and Mrs. Joe Martin of Brussels, each gave an excellent LIFE MEMBERSHIP Mrs. Robert Ritter Was UCW Speaker The general meeting of Lucknow United Church Women was held in the Fellowship Room on Tuesday, May 24 at 8.00 p.m. The president, Mrs. Glen Walden, welcomed the 24 ladies" with a poem entitled "Take Time". The Stewardship Division was in charge of the program with Miss Elizabeth Ritchie convener, assist- ed by Mrs. Gordon Morrison, Mrs. Robert Irwin, Mrs. Jack Treleaven and Mrs. Alex Andrew. Hymns "What a friend" and "Take my life", accompanied by Mrs. Gordon -Czyley;were- wag- by the-Wits. Mrs. Gordon Morrison read the scripture and Mrs. Alex Andrew led in prayer. A piano duet "The Green Leaves of Summer" by Kay and Karl Morrison was enjoyed by the ladies. Mrs. Jack Treleaven and Mrs. Robert Irwin presented a humorous skit based on the theme "Stewardship". Mrs. Eldon Bradley introduced the guest speaker of the evening, Mrs. Robert Ritter of Wingham. Mrs. Ritter spoke on the work and projects of the Auxiliary of the Wingham and District Hospital. She outlined, many historical facts as well as the current affairs and activities. Mrs. Ritter stressed the fact that the hospital is a district one and everyone benefits from the Auxiliary involvement. Mrs. Vern- on Hunter expressed thanks and appreciation to Mrs. Ritter. Mrs. Glen Walden presided over the business portion of the meeting. Mrs. Raynard Ackert reported that, Mrs. Robert Finlay will be the new corresponding secretary. The minutes, corres- pondence and treasurer's report were read. A Life Membership was present- ed to Mrs. Allan Johnson by Mrs. Jack Treleaven. Mrs. Johnson expressed her appreciation to the ladies and wished the U.C.W. all the best in the future. It was decided to hold the Annual Fall Anniversary Supper again this year and the prices were set. Mrs. Walden closed the meeting with prayer. was by Mrs. Ralph Nixon, Wing- ham. The fall board meeting will be held in Belmore on September 19 at 2 p.m. The Biennial Con- ference is to take place on Octo- ber 29 in Don Mills. Life. He arrived in time for the Festival for Life which was held May 5 to 7. • Adrian was greeted on his arrival in Ottawa by Marion Dewar, Deputy Mayor and, Pro Life members. During his walk Adrian encountered only one slight un- pleasant incident. He is convinced that the majority of people are opposed to liberal abortion laws. While in Ottawa Adrian was interviewed on a 12 minute T.V. show and an hour long open line radio show. Since returning he was interviewed by Jim Swan of CKNX radio. Adrian constantly reminds people that he is not just anti-abortion, he is Pro Life. This takes in the dignity of all human life, the pre-born, youth, aged, handicapped and mentally retard. ed. Money raised by the walk will be divided between Pro Life and Mrs. Marian Zinn Was UCW Speaker DUNGANNON NEWS Intended for last week There was a pot luck dinner and meeting of, Dungannon United Church Women in the church basement on Monday at 12.30 with 24 visitors and 22 'members. Mrs. Elma Reed and Mrs. Tinie Logten- berg welcomed the guests at the door. Mrs. Cecil Blake had several photos on' display for perusal. Rev. G. H. Dobson said the grace and everyone sat down to tables decorated with small floral ar- rangements. After dinner a sing song -was_ enjoyed with Mrs. Carol Reed at the piano. The devotional was taken by Mrs. Amy Wiggins, who read chosen verses from Ruth on the theme, "The Values of Friend- ship". Mrs. Marjorie Pentland gave a reading, "When Old Friends Meet". The offering was taken and prayer offered by Mt's. Helen Dawson. The guests were asked to state a fond ,memory of Dungannon United Church as the roll call was taken. Mrs. Cecil Blake introduced the guest speaker, Mrs. Marian Zinn, who showed slides of local scenes including snow scenes, snow removal and the bridge 'on the 4th in various stages of construction. Mrs. Donna Alton gave a reading, "The New Minister's Wife". Mrs. Laverne Martin told of second hand clothing being gathered to be sold in Kitchener and proceeds sent for overseas relief. Anyone having 'clothing to donate could contact Mrs. Martin or other members of 'Dungannon Christian Fellowship Church. Mrs. Tinie Logtenberg spoke words of appreciation for so many attending and introduced Mrs. Chas. Wilkins who brought greetings from Pres- bytery. The ladies were told of request for a bale to go to 'Angola which would include used clothing, plastic bags, pins, soap, knitting yarn. Any donations are to be at the church by June 19. The ladies of Chalmers served a bountiful and delicious supper in the community Memorial Hall. The evening session began with an organ prelude by Mrs. Don Ross, followed by a hymn. Devo- tions were taken by the Lucknow Evening group, scripture by Mrs. R. E. Forster, meditation by Mrs. K. Laidlaw and prayer by Mrs. Lloyd Moffat. Mrs. Gordon Rin- toul gave the address of welcome. A chorus by four young ladies was enjoyed. Mr. Kay was called on and spoke encouragingly of the work done throughout the world by Mr. Whilsmith who was again intro- duced by Mrs. J. W. English. Mr. Whilsmith spoke of his ex- periences and work among the young people in the different countries and ended his address with a film and an interesting dis- play of items collected on his travels.
