One person put a value on top quality legume hay at $130/ton for protein value alone. At todays soybean meal prices, that value will probably be closer to $160/ton. If we get 4-5 tons/acre we can grow a lot of dollars worth of protein if we handle the hay. However, in order to get that yield. and that amount of protein, we have to have a high legume content and get it off as soon after the 5th of June as possible. The percentage of protein will decrease at a rate of about 2% /week from that date on. By July 1st the best you can do would be 14% and in actual practice it' would be closer to rr% or r2'% protein. The varue of your hay crop just dropped to $95/ton from $160. It pays to get at the hay early. It also pays to have your feed tested as soon after it is off as possible. Baled hay , should be sampled so that all fields and . changes in quality are in the sample. Haylage can be sampled as it is going in the silo. Of the 5700 samples tested at Guelph last year, over two-thirds were sent in in November, Decem- ber, and January. Get yours in early • and avoid •the rush. Feed test kits available at your OMAF office. W. J. GREXTON, Assoc. Ag. Rep. VERY IMPORTANT NOTICES!!!! PREEMERGENT CORN HERBICIDES To be effective, chemicals such as Lasso, Bladex and Primextra have to be washed into the soil. If at least 1/2 inch of rain doesn't fall within 5-7 days after spraying, .the chemicals should be given a shallow incorporation. This can easily be done with a harrow, even if some corn has emerged.
