United Church, Ripley, was held on Sunday afternoon, April 17, following a pot luck lunch after 'the morning worship service. Rev. James Bushell, chairman for the afternoon, opened the meeting with prayer. Mrs. William Arnold and Mrs.. Robert Osborne were appointed secretary and press reporter, respectively for the meeting. Wallace Pollock reported on behalf of the Board of Stewards. Clayton Nicholson, Lloyd Wylds, Bill Robinson, Albert Middelkamp and Bill Elliott were appointed to the Board of Stewards. Walter Forster, clerk of session, gave the session report. Two persons were appointed, subject to acceptance ' to the session. Barry Pollock, Joyce Osborne, Heather Boyle and Paul Culbert were appointed as Observing Elders. Mrs. Donald Blue as delegate and Mrs. Reg. 'Moore as alternate delegate to Presbytery and Confer- ence were appointed at a special meeting on February 13 which was to have been the day of the annual meeting, but the weatherman changed the plans. Mrs. Robert Osborne gave the president's report' of the United Church Women and also gave the treasurer's report on behalf of the treasurer. Mrs. Wm. Arnold reported on her work as Archivist. She also reported that a few Church Directories are still available for sale. Regarding the Sunday School it was reported that there has been a decline in attendance in the first four months of 1977. Hopefully, improvement in attendance will be seen now that the weather is better. Mrs. Wallace Pollock, choir leader reported for the choir. Words of appreciation were PINETREE CRESTENETS BY AUBREY HIGGINS Just so that you will know that our people here are not politicians, but good clean living citizens, I will give you a little run down on just how clean we are. Those that are bedridden get at least one thorough sponge bath a day, sometimes more. The rest of us get the choice of the tub or shower once a week. (Of course we bath ourselves as much as possible every day). I don't know everything about the tub, I never get into it, but the shower, with the aid of some of those girls, is something to look forward to. After being thorOughly dried and having a good back rub with lots of talcum, your toenails cut and fully clothed, one has the feeling that they are superior, no matter who they meet. I expect the effect is the same in the tub bath, expressed, by the minister to the retired elders and stewards, and to the organist, choir leader and choir and to the junior choir and its leaders. Appreciation was expres- sed to the ushers by Mrs. 'Ross Martyn. The financial report of the church was approved as printed. Mrs. Walter Black and Reg Moore reported on behalf of the manse committee. Walter Forster read the "In Memoriam", after which there was a minute's silence. Plans were made for the annual church anniversary of St. Andrew's United Church which is to be held on Sunday, June 12. Mrs. Robert Osborne announced that anyone wishing to order a 1978 United Church calendar, contact her or a unit leader of the U.C.W. Reg Moore expressed apprecia- tion to the Bushell family on behalf of the congregation. The meeting was adjourned with Rev. James Bushell pronouncing the benediction. but I am sticking with the shower. The reason I have written this is because I am going to say a little about Lucknow and the word politics might be mentioned and it seems tome every time'l hear that word mentioned, that the word dirty gets mixed up in it. So with the exception of 3 or maybe 4, you will find Pinecrest clean out of it. This town, for the last 30 years, has not varied in the size of population over about 50. Every time one picks up the local paper there are pictures of some native students graduating from college, many with honours. Why, are they not in their home town? --beCause there is nothing for them to do here. With the type of farming country that surrounds this place, it has everything in its favour to make it quite a large town with stores and places of business. It is large enough to be able to-compete with the places our citizens drive to where they get 'a larger selection and cheaper prices, because of greater quantity of sales. There have been opportunities right here. Take for one instance the opportunity that was open to build- the home for those over 65 right within a short block of everything, instead of over a mile out in the bush. Those other two businesses would have come any- ways, because they had foresight enough to know that they would make money by coming to this town. There will be sewers coming to this town in a very short time. Let's make it as easy on the stria!l individual tax payer as possible. The four new councilmen who had the honour of the voters choice out of 9 candidates: let's hope. the only reason you accepted the nomination was that yOu believed in this little village and you wanted to help the people who elected you You have got it, use it Let us then be up and doing. With a heart for every fate Still - achieving, still pursuing Learn to labour and not to wait. One little word changed in the old verse and an expression we see every day on television.
