----Sound, District A Effective Speak-
ing chairman, introduced Governor
Lloyd Stuart who conducted the
contest for the evening. Each
contestant gave his or her prepared
speech and then were given a few
minutes to prepare an impromptu
speech of from 2 to 3 minutes.
Winner in the girls division was
Mary Luanne Clare, a grade 9
student at ,the F. E. 'Madill
Secondary School, Wingham who
spoke on "Drugs". Mary Luanne
was sponsored by the Lucknow
Lions Club). Winner in the boys
division was Gerald Schieven, a
grade 13 student at Mount Forest
speaking on "Tall People". Win-
ners received trophies and cash
prizes. Mary Luanne and Gerald,
first place winners, will go to
Peterborough for a final speakoff
between the provinces of Ontario,
Quebec and Labrador. Registration
will take' place on Friday, May 6
with the Effective Speaking compe-
titions to be held on Saturday, May
7th. Good luck to Mary Luanne and
Gerald. '
LANGSIDE
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Bregman,
Joanne and Christine last Friday
called- on Bob's mother, Mrs. Jan
Bregman of Exeter. They spent a_
few hours in London then went on
to Toronto where they spent the
rest of the weekend.
Little Lu Ann Bongertman of
Teeswater spent Friday with her
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert
Bongertman.
We are sorry to report that little
Jimmy Miller is not improving as
fast as we would like him to be. We
hope to have a better report next
week.
Mr. and Mrs. George Young,
Heather, Bradley and Cheryl of
Wingham visited on Sunday with
Mni and Mrs. Jim Young and
family.
Russell Springer spent Sunday
with Ken Young.

Mrs. Kay capably took charge of
the sermon in the absence of her
husband Bev Kay. Wendy Kay
gave the children's story.

meeting on Sunday evening at
Langside Church.
Former Resident
Died Following
Brief Illness
JACK BEATON
John C. Beaton, raised at the
"Grey Ox" and living retired near
Kincardine, passed away at Kin-
cardine General Hospital, March
2nd. He was in his 71st year.
"Jack", as he was familiarly
known, was raised on the 4th
concession of Kinloss, attended
Grey Ox (S.S. No. 6) Public School
and, Lucknow Continuation School.
He, was a member of the staff of the
local Bank of Montreal during the
early '20s', was transferred: to
London, and later to Edmonton,
Alberta. It was there that he
became associated with Imperial
ich p an rh e -served -
for 43 years. During the early '30s',
he was transferred to Toronto
where he married Meta Graham of
Edmonton.
Through enrolment with La Salle
Extension University of Chicago,
he acquired, certification as a public
accountant, and held responsible
positions in the credit department
of his company.
He was an active member of
York Lodge A.F. & A.M. Toronto,
and, a charter member of H. L.
Martin Lodge A.F. & A.M.
(Imperial Oil) Toronto. He was a
member of Ellsmere United
Church, Scarboro.
He was predeceased 'by an only
sister, Lea, (Mrs. Rutherford), in
1974, and a son Jimmy in 1960.
He leaves to mourn his passing,
his wife Meta, and one son Graham
of R. R. 4 Markham. •
Of a kindly disposition, and an
earned reputation for integrity, he
had acquired a wide circle of
friends. Interment was in Rest
Haven Memorial Park, Scarboro:

PURPLE GROVE NEWS
Intended for last week
Kevin Boyle entertained his
hockey team mates (Ripley Pee
Wees) and their parents at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Francis
Boyle on Sunday. The team
presented manager, Al Irwin and
coach, Carl Stanley with a desk set
in appreciation of the season's hard
work.
Congratulations to Ripley Mid-
gets who won *.the semi finals
against Shedden. The boys go on
now to the finals against Oakwood
for the All Ontario Championship.
Misses Cathy Dore of Kincardine
and Janice Brown were dinner
guests on Sunday of Mr. and Mrs.
Don Dore, Vicki and Frankie.
Janice is visiting with her parents
for a few days in Millarton before
her return trip to Regina. She had
spent the past three weeks in
Granada, holidaying.
Miss Vicki Dore visited on
Sunday with Miss Meryl Stewart in
Lucknow.
Visitors on Saturday with Mr.
and Mrs. Roy Collins and family
were Mr. and Mrs. Sandy Hills and
family of Port Elgin.
Maureen Collins, Jennifer, An-
gela and David spent a few days
last week with her parents at
Arthur.
SOUTH KINLOSS
Lynda McQuillin spent the
Easter holidays at her parent's
home, Mr. and Mrs. Dick McQuil-
lin and Ron.
Mrs. Dan Thomson is still in
Wingham Hospital and we hope
she will be well and soon home
again.
The guest minister on Sunday
was Rev. Mr. McSween of Toronto.
Rev. Anthony Dallison from Living-
ston, Scotland, will be conducting
the service on Easter Sunday for a
call.
Dr. and Mrs. William Buckton,
George and David of Kitchener,
visited with Mr. and Mrs. Herb
Buckton on the weekend. They
were all Sunday dinner 'guests with
Mr. and Mrs. John Mowbray.
Don't forget to come to the Good
Priday service on Friday, April 8th
at 7.45 o'clock. Everyone is
welcome at South Kinloss.
