This Week In Ripley
BY AB WYLDS
With all those farm auction sale
bills recently posted in George
McLean's store and at other
locations in the village, it looked
like one of those signs that spring
was here. However, last Thursday
morning falling snow, driven by a
strong east wind, suddenly picked
up and for a short time winter was
back and it has made return trips
since then.

This is the week known as the
"winter break" replacing the
former week of Easter holidays in
schools. Many people were
travelling, and mainly south.
Kenneth MacLennan of the, Park-
dale Collegiate staff in Toronto and
his mother Mrs. Norma MacLen-
nan of Ripley went by way of
Detroit to Eastern Kentucky to visit
there, to visit with relatives in the
Ashland area. They flew down on
Monday of this week.
A patient in Kincardine and
District Hospital for several years,
Mrs. Wright passed away there
last Thursday in her 71st year.
Sympathy is extended to her family
- her husband Simeon of Huron
Villa in Ripley, son Douglas of
Dawson Creek, British Columbia,
and :four daughters . Donna, Mrs.
Michael Riddick of London; Kay,
Mrs. Orville Small of Kincardine;
Alayne, Mrs. Ernest Evans of the
5th concession, Kincardine Town-
ship; and Judy, Mrs. Eric MacLeod

and this is often the night out.
Special grants (80%) are avail-
able for Community Schools. With
declining enrolment and empty
classrooms in some areas, this will
likely be a project for the future in
which anyone from 4 to 80 plus can
attend day or night sessions.
To the residents of Ashfield and
West 'Wawanosh, a newsletter will
be going home with your child from .
Brookside around the first week in
April. It is hoped that you will fill in
the required information and
return the paper back to school.
Also discuss the questions with
your neighbour who has no
children in elementary school.
Brookside is used very extensively
after hours, but there is no reason
why More people cannot use it.
From my weekly Ontario School
Trustees' Council Report comes
this item. A proposal to reorganize
the school year into two Semesters,
with lengthy breaks in mid-winter
and mid-summer replacing conven-
tional holidays, is under considera-
tion by an Eastern Ontario Board,
and is now being circulated for,
community and teacher reaction.
..The plan would have schools
continue to provide 185 instruction-
al days, but on a two-semester
basis, one running from August 10
to December 22 and the other from
February 15 to June 30. Traditional
summer holidays and the March
winter break would • be abolished.
The plan is proposed for both
elementary and secondary schools.
In the light of the current energy
shortage, rising energy costs,
serious financial restraints and
severe winter weather, the tradi-
tional school year might be one
practice that is now worth examin-
ing closely.
of Bervie. Mrs. Wright, who was
known to niany people in this area
from visiting or being in Kincard-
ine Hospital, was the former Vesta
Mary Porterfield, born in Howick
Township, June 14, 1906. Funeral
services were conducted by Rev.
Allan McDowell of Kincardine at
the Ross MacLennan Funeral
Home and at Kincardine Cemetery.

A new record for handling a
piece of mail 'was set earlier this
month - not like the times Bill Wall
of Kincardine drove the red mail
truck through Ripley, Lucknow,
Wingham and on to the city. It took
a card mailed and postmarked at
Ripley on Friday, March 11 till
Wednesday morning, March 16 to
reach the mail box of Robert
Osborne, R. R. 5 tucknow. 'it was
to notify Bob of a meeting in Ripley
on Monday evening, March 14th.
To further acquaint you with the
location of Bob and Muriel
Osborne's farm - it is on the 4th
concession of Huron Township
which is two blocks south of Ripley,
then about 100 rods east of the 15th
intersection, a distance of three
miles. It is quite possible that it
may have travelled to Kitchener to
get to Lucknow post office, or some
other similar simple route.' Thanks
to Mrs. Muriel Osborne for this
item.
