Holyrood W.I.
Study Australia
And New Zealand
KINLOUGH NEWS
Mrs. Ellwood Elliott was hostess
for the Holyrood Women's Institute
meeting on Thursday afternoon.
Mrs. Bill MacPherson welcomed
everyone including one visitor.
Following the opening exercises,
the roll call, an item of interest
from Australia, was answered by
members.
A $10.00 donation was given to
the War Memorial Children's
Hospital, London.
The meeting of the District
Directors will be held at White-
church on , March 22nd.
. The Sunshine Sister- draw was
made and there was a discussion on
the District Annual meeting and
Mrs. Lorne Eadie was appointed' to
look into available accommodation
in Lucknow. Mrs.. Lorne Eadie
'presided for 'the program and the
topic was New Zealand and
Australia with its capital Canberra.
It is known for sheep raising and
mining and for Flying Doctors'
Service, and the National Anthem
"Waltzing Matilda". The currency
is the dollar, and kindness is
outstanding among the Austral-
ian people. Sydney has a beautiful
Opera House. When Douglas Eadie
and Art Stanley visited there the
temperature was 70 degrees to 80
degrees 'at Rockhampton. A
highlight of their trip was a visit
with Mr. and Mrs. Bevan McLean.
They played hockey with Bevan,
who was a native of Kinlough. The
central place of Aestralla is Alice
Springs, 1000 milesirom nowhere
in the mountains. The prices of
cattle are $5.00 a head and sheep
40 cents.
New Zealand has 2 main Islands
plus Stewart Island to the south.
There is a population of 600, mostly
fishermen. It is described as a long
white cloud in appearance.
Agriculture and sheep raising
are the basis of the economy. The
people are very friendly. All dairy
products are very cheap. Deer are
hunted by helicopter with a
continual open season.
This study was very worthwhile
and a contest on it was given to the
members to work out at home and
return to the next meeting. Mrs. P.
A. Murray gave a reading, "The
Legend of the Blarney Stone".
Mrs. Frank Maulden told of an
upcoming celebration this summer
for the 80th birthday of the W.I. in
1977. 0 Canada and Grace closed
the meeting and delicious refresh-
ments were served.
