Every vehicle carrying students
for Bruce County board of
education should be equipped
with two-way radios by Sept. 1, a
report to the board recommends.
The report, prepared by busi-
ness superintendent Roland Swa-
nson, was presented to the board
last week. In December, the
trustees decided any bus carrying
10 or more students should be
radio-equipped.
The new report suggests this
limit be dropped because many of
the contracted bus operators
drive fewer than 10 students in
cars or small vans.
The report also suggests that

Mrs. Louis 'Dalton, R. R. 1
the board rent a radio repeater
relay station from Bell Canada at
its Greenock Township tower.
Operators should have base ,
stations and mobile units which
could feed into the tower station
and be rebroadcast over the
whole county, it said.
The ' board should pay the
operators an annual subsidy for
each base station and mobile', it
suggests -- possibly $300 for the
base and $125 for each mobile.
Operators who get approval
from the board to use citizen's
band radios should be given $50 a
year, it said.
This year the board is paying a
flat $110 bonus for each bus with
a two-way radio.

There was a very small attend-
ance at St. Joseph's School,
Kingsbridge on Thursday, Febru-,
Mr. Swanson's report suggest-
ed two methods of setting up the
. county-wide radio system. One'
was that the operators build
antennas which could be used by
several of them in the same area
and, share the costa It would take
about eight stations of that type to
cover -the county and each would
need a dispatcher on duty while
the buses were running.
The adVantages of the system
are that there would be fewer
mobiles on each frequency and if
one base station was out of order,
the rest of the county would not
be affected. There could also be
limited bus-to-bus communica-
tion if any broke down.
But the scattered base station
ary 24 as the Dykstra Bus was the
only bus to venture out on the
slippery roads and only made
pickups on Highway 21, south of
the school. Bus pickups for both
the Goderich District Collegiate
Institute and the F. E. Madill
Second* School, Wingham were
made as usual. Pupils at St.
Joseph's School, Kingsbridge were
dismissed at 2 p.m. on Friday,
February 25 due to the poor
visibility caused by the blowing
snow.
Mrs. Reis (Marie) Miltenberg is
a patient in Victoria Hospital,
London. Surgery was performed
on Tuesday, February 22. A
speedy recovery is the wish of the
Kingsbridge folk.
Ben, Len and Marianne Milten-
berg, of the University of Guelph
spent the weekend at the home of
their parents, Mr. and Mrs. John
system would require the pur-
chase and construction of large
towers, possibly on a site some
distance from the operators'
headquarters. There is also a
short range between the base and'
the mobile and the possiblity that
the frequency could be allocated
to other radio users.
The system the report recom-
mends -- the relay repeater
station -- does. not require the
board to build a large tower and
there would be better communi-
cation between the base and
wehicles as well as between the
wehicles themselves.
The operators would have the'
option of renting the equipment
from Bell Canada.
