News Pat Gabriel, J 'or President of the N.F.U., outline some of the reasons why young p le should be involved in the farm organiza- tion. To the majority of young people in Canada, the opportunity to remain on the land as primary producers dims with each passing year. The cost price squeeze, coupled with surges and declines in farm community prices, is a major factor in the decline of the rural population. Multi-national corpor- ations continue to increase pres- sure for marketing control over all major farm commodities. The powers held by national marketing agencies, such as the Canadian Wheat Board, Canadian Dairy Commission and the Canadian Egg Marketing Agency, are slowly being eroded, in favour of profit Pee Wees Down Two Games Western Ontario DD Pee Wee hockey finals on February 10 saw Milverton edge Lucknow 4-3. Another road block is the escalating price of farm land. Existing farmers are financially better off to incorporate retiring farmers' land with their own. New producers, who do obtain a produc= tion base, are often forced out by interest payments on acquired loans. Foreign capital and non-farm investors also continue to drive the price of good farm land out of reach of primary producers. Our personal involvement in the N.F.U. and the kinds of programs in which we channel our efforts will produce positive results. This is the challenge facing young people today, the Junior President said.
