"The trouble with the welfare system?" said the long-haired youth. "They ask you too many memory- bending questions. Like, "When were you last employed?..." The dialogue is from the comic strip Flub, a regular feature of the weekly,news- paper, The Scarborough Mirror. Its creator is Peterborough's Gerry McManus, an industrial abatement inspector • for the Ontario Ministry of the Environment who believes that making people laugh is, as the saying goes, very serious business. "Sometimes you go ,sour and have spells when everything seems funny to you," said Gerry. When comic situations come to mind for Flub, the non- smoking, non-drinking; unmarried, inept central character, Gerry pens them immediately. Good ideas are quickly forgotten, especially when they spring up in the midst of a hectic working day investigating complaints for the Min- istry. Often the complaints prove more comical than the ideas, said Gerry. Following up a citizen's complaint Gerry was once greeted by a lady standing unblinking and unclothed in her doorway. With the deftness of a comic strip character, • Gerry replied "Uh, good morning, sir." The incident will rest in Gerry's memory, but it will never be in his strip. Comic strip writers, he said, adhere to a strict moral code. Bosoms, buttocks and body fun- ctions are taboo. So are nudity, nihilism and national origin. But staying within the bounds of good taste is easier, said Gerry, than keeping a strip tuned to the 10 YEARS AGO JANUARY 1967 In the Lucknow Men's 9 p.m. bowling league; Clarence Greer broke all records with a triple game of 958 flat and a single game of 363 flat. Donald McKenzie, Reeve of, Ashfield Township,' was elected Warden of Huron County by acclamation. A special evening was' held by the Lucknow and District Lions Club to observe the 10th anniver- sary of the formation of their club. M. L. (Mike) Sanderson was the 1967 president. Other presidents for the ten years were Omar Brooks, Robert Finlay, Robert McIntosh, Lloyd Ashton, Frank Thompson, Gordon Montgomery, Cecil Blake, Charles Webster and issues of the day, such as women's liberation. For example, one strip found an etomologist being blisted for a reference to a "lady" bug. "You mean a 'person' bug," snapped the female observer. The essence of the character, ,Flub, goes back 20 years. It's modelled after an unloired second engineer under whom Gerry served in the merchant marine. Since then Gerry has become a student of more than 50 cartoonists. "As a student of comic strips, I'm always learn- ing," says Gerry. In that way, it's a lot like working• in the environmental field... "By the way, there's no punchline to this," says Gerry. Sorry 'bout that ' charter president Rae Watson. Harvey Webster, last president of the former Clansmen Club, was ,honourary president when the club was chartered. 30 YEARS AGO JANUARY 1947 Reeve J. W. Joynt of Lucknow brought honour to himself and to the Village by his election as the 75th Warden of the County of Bruce. He was the third Lucknow reeve to have held this office. Reeve Brown Smyth of • West Wawanosh was elected Huron County Warden. , At the annual meeting of Lucknow Presbyterian Church, a beautiful hymn book was presented to Mrs. Robert Douglas in apprec- iation of fifty years service to the choir. 50 YEARS AGO JANUARY 1927 George Greer's pond, just east of Lucknow, was a busy place owing to the ice harvest being in full swing. Ice was reported to be of unusual quality, being solid water ice throughout.
