FARM REPORT
DAIRY BARN IMPROVEMENTS
During the past year or so the
economic climate for many dairy
farmers has been such that very
little in the way of investment has
been made in new or improved
facilities. However, it now appears
that the slump period is just about
over and that the next while will be
one of reasonable prosperity for
those dairy farmers who are set up
to produce milk on an efficient
basis. One of the keys to optimum
productions is the use of facilities
that will allow one man to produce
a sufficient volume of milk to yield
the desired level of income. Just a
few years ago the suggested goal
was 300,000 pounds per man.
Now, that has risen to something
approaching one-half million
pounds. Two things help a farmer
reach this goal - high producing
cows and time and labour saving
facilities.
The dairyman is paid only on the
basis of volume of milk produced .-
not directly on the length of time he
requires to look after the dairy
herd. Certainly his time is much
better spent looking after cattle
than physically handling feed and
manure. The layout or arrange-
ment of the housing, feeding and
milking facilities is highly import-
ant, whether the cattle are kept in a
tie stall or a free stall barn.
• For many farmers, particularly
those who are trying to look after
30-40 cows in an older, 2-storey
barn, the best housing system is
probably a tie stall unit. But in
many cases if time and labour
requirements are to be kept within
reason, the existing housing facilit-
ies should be remodelled. If this is
the case on ybur farm now might be
the time to consider making plans
for those changes. Planning on
paper, where changes can be made
at no cost, should be done well in
advance of any actual work. This is
where those of us in the local office
of the Ontario •Ministry of Agricul-
ture and . Food can possibly be of
some assistance = helping you 'to
make realistic, sensible, long-term
plans for changes that will end up
assisting you to be a better
dairyman. Contact us - we would
like to help.

METRIC GRAIN MEASURES
On February 1, the „grain trade
will convert to the metric system of
measurement. The trading units
will be the tonne which is equal to
2200 pounds.
I am sure when the initial
confusion is over, that we will
wonder why we didn't switch to the
metric system years ago.
For instance in the weight
measurements the basic measure-
ment is a gram. 1000 grams = 1
kilogram and 1000 kilograms = 1
tonne. The fertilizer business will
also switch to metric in the near
future.
