Blyth Atoms play
in silver stick
BY RUSTY BLADES
The Blyth Atoms participated in
the Wingham Silver Stick Tourna
ment last weekend where they
experienced mixed results. The
vaunted Blyth offence was held in
check in Blyth’s two games, but the
defence came up strong throughout
the tourney.
Blyth opened the tournament
against Mildmay on Friday, Decem
ber 16. The goaltending came up big
in Blyth’s 3-1 win. Blyth opened the
scoring with only two seconds left in
the first period as Brian McNichol
slid a loose puck just barely across
the goal line as Christopher Howson
assisted on the goal.
Scott Arthur then scored the
winner 13 seconds into the second
stanza as he cashed in on Brad
Anderson’s pointblast. Mildmay cut
Blyth’s lead in half before the second
period expired with a power play
goal.
The action continued throughout
the third period before Scott Arthur
scored his second goal of the game
after a slick pass to the front of the
Mildmay goal by Ryan Chamney.
Jason Rutledge also assisted on this
insurance marker.
This 3-1 opening win sent Blyth
into.the championship round where
they tangled with Ripley on Satur
day, December 17.
Another defensive struggle de
veloped as Ripley shaded Blyth 2-1.
After a scoreless first period, Brian
McNichol netted the only goal of the
second frame. This power play goal
was scored right off a face-off deep in
the Ripley zone as Brian won the
draw and snapped a quick shot past
the Ripley goaltender.
The score remained 1-0 in Blyth’s
favour until midway through the
third period when Ripley tied the
score. Ripley then notched the
winner with five and a half minutes
left in the game. Blyth had the man
advantage for the final 1:46 due to a
Ripley penalty and they also pulled
their goalie for an extra attacker with
over a minute left in the game.
Although they played the rest of the
game in the Ripley zone, they
couldn’t score the equalizer as the
huge Ripley defence came up with
thebigplay when itwas needed.
Ripley held on for a close 2-1 win to
eliminate Blyth from further Silver
Stick competition.
The Blyth defence has been
strengthened with the addition of
Rob Johnston who has been brought
up from the house league team.
Hopefully, the offence will get
untracked this week as the team
hosts Elma Logan on Wednesday
and then travel to Brussels on Friday
night. After that it’s a showdown
with Santa and some Christmas
turkey as the team enjoys a
Christmas break.
