H Security Trust The Brussels Jr. D Bulls defeated the hometown Exeter Hawks 8-5 Friday night in a game that saw defenseman Kevin Talsma make his goaltending debut. The Bulls jumped quickly into a 3-0 first period lead. Marty Rutledge notched an unassisted goal at the midway point of the period for a 1-0 lead. Minutes later, Steve Wheeler tipped home a Joel Baker point shot for a two goal lead and with only three seconds left on the clock, Rutledge scored his second of the period from Steve Fritz. The Bulls increased their lead in the opening minutes of the second period to 5-0 as Rutledge set up Brian Campbell at the 33 second mark, followed by Steve Wheeler’s second of the game, assisted by Kevin Talsma. Exeter broke the shutout late in the period, but Bob McMillan replied seconds later with a setup by Wheeler and Baker for a 6-1 lead after two periods. Again the Bulls’ lack of killer instinct almost cost them as Exeter fired two quick goals early in the third period to cut the lead to 6-3. Then the unexpected happened: at the 9:00 mark as the Bulls were breaking over center ice, a lone Exeter skater continued his foray towards the Brussels net, and in a deliberate attempt to injure, sent John Steffler crashing to the ice, injuring his knee in the process. After a 10-minute delay, Steffler decided to continue playing as the Bulls had no backup for the game. ThepuckwasdroppedandCampbell immediately scored with Rutledge and Fritz drawing assists. At this point the injury proved too much for Steffler, who was helped to the dressing room. Kevin Talsma, who had played “some” goal at the PeeWee level, quickly donned the goalkeeping equipment and without benefit of warmup was pressed into action with 10:23 remaining in the game. In true storybook tradition, the Bulls check ed Exeter to a standstill with just under four minutes remaining, when Rutledge set up Ron Strome for the Bulls’ eighth and final goal. The Juniors allowed Exeter two Iastminutegoalsforafinal 8-5 Bulls’ victory. Kevin Talsma faced six shots in his emergency debut. On Sunday afternoon the Bulls completed their weekend sweep of the Exeter Hawks with a 5-3 victory.
