Brussels Legion back in business, re-opens Jan. 7 Branch 218 of the Royal Canadian Legion is now back in business, re-opening on December 1. An official reopening ceremony is plan­ ned for Saturday, January 7. The ceremonies will begin with a short program outside which will feature a wreath laying, ribbon cutting and an aerial salute. This will be followed by a program in the auditorium. Special dignitaries such as Provin­ cial President Joe Kobolak, local politicians, and district and zone legion officials will be in attendance. An Open House will follow the official ceremonies. A dance is planned for the auditorium with music by “Country Companions”. All events are open to the public, but dance tickets are limited, so get yours early! In other branch news, euchre teams finished first and third at the Zone Tournament. The team of Bill Elston, Gord Nichol, Les Brewer and Bob Fraser captured the Zone Crown, while the third place team consisted of Al Nichol, Cam Ross, Eric Ross and Bob Richardson. These two teams will represent the Branch at the DistrictTournament at Elora in the spring. The Legion held its lastChristmas Bingo on December 16. The Early Bird winner was Cindy Steep; while turkeys were won by Helen Dobson, Brett Baur, Betty Heard, Roy Brenie, Marg McCutcheon, Tara Parker, Neil Adams, Heilka Roetci- soender, Barry Blake and Sandra Machan. Specials were won by: first, Barb Knight, $50; second, Eluned Mc­ Nair, $25 and Sharon Cameron, $25. The $100 jackpot was won by Lisa Glanville. The winners in the ladies auxiliary 50/50 draw were: first, Gordon Nichol, $50; second, Mildred Ament, $30; and third, Crystal Tavlor, $20. Brussels People Compiled by Marilyn Hip pins Call 887-9089 Bill Stevenson, RR 2, Brussels was the winner of the Brussels Merchant’s Shopping Spree Mon­ day night. He calmly toured the Brussels EMA and Brussels Village Market scooping up $366 worth of groceries in 60 seconds, just off the record of $395 set last week by Councillor Marv Stretton. Harold and Violet Scheffner spent the weekend at Bob and Mary Jane Legers for a Christmas get-together. A good time was had by all despite the eventful shopping excursion on Sunday. On Sunday, Dec. 11 the Higgins family held Christmas at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Ward, Jeff and Julie of St. Marys. Family members attending were: Mr. and Mrs. Don Edgar of RR 1, Alienford; Mr. and Mrs. Brian David, Ashley and Ryan of Shallow Lake; Miss Sandie Kechnie of Exeter; Mr. and Mrs. John Oliver and David of RR 1, Clifford; Mr. and Mrs. Bob Higgins, Dennis and Ronald of Blyth and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Higgins of Brussels. I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas, especially those who are in the hospital and nursing homes who can’t be with their families on these occasions. Also to our faithful readers of The Citizen who say they read my column every week, Merry Christmas Berva, Doc and Ann. It was nice to see you again. May old acquaintance never be forgotten. Majestic Wl packs boxes for shut-ins The Christmas meeting for the Brussels Majestic Women’s Insti­ tute was held on Dec. 14 at the library. President Edna McLellan opened the meeting, followed by a pot luck lunch. Alice Brothers and Freda Pipe played the piano before the business began and a gift exchange took place. Doris McCall read the minutes of the last meeting and the treasurer’s report. Roll call was answered with something for the shut-in boxes. The boxes were to be packed on Dec. 16, at 1 p.m. at the library.
