St. Mark's holds last service Alicia Marshall, RR 3, Blyth, didn’t know whether to trust that hairy old man or not when she climbed up on Santa’s knee during a visit to Auburn Thursday night. Santa was on hand at the local Co-op store to visit local youngsters. The doors of St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Auburn closed forever after a final service attended by current and former parishioners Sunday afternoon. Rt. Rev. Bishop Derwyn Jones, Bishop of Huron preached the final sermon at the church. Also taking part in the service were the current minister, Rev. Patt Nunn and past ministers Keith Stokes, now of London, and Rev. Robin Lyons, now' of Tillsonburg. Membership in the church had declined to only eight families in recent years. The congregation will now be combined with Trinity Church, Blyth under Rev. Nunn. Bishop Jones explained that the church building will now go into the care of a committee of the Diocese which will look after the disposition of church assets to other churches and hospital chapels. A decision w ill be made on the future of the building itself by the committee. Sometimes such buildings are sold to other denominations although in the Auburn case it seems unlikely. The building could be deconsecrated and sold for other purposes or it may be torn down and the land sold. Bishop Jones said. The church dates back to the 1870’s when George Fulton donated the land on which the church was built. The church was almost completedwhenahighwindtook the roof off andhadtobe replaced by three church members, Samuel Caldwell, Robert Medd and Thomas Nicholson. Originally services in Manchester (the original name for Auburn) were held in Young’s School House with Rev. J. Si me of Dun gan non as the first minister. He also served congregations in St. Helens and Lucknow. The first service in the current building was in 1883. Later, in 1906 church sheds were built and these were sold to the county in 1936. Although the membership in the church had dwindled, over the years many of the most prominent families in the village and surrounding areas had belonged to the church.
