From the Minister's Study Nothing' BY BOB BARNHART PASTOR, BLYTH CHURCH OF GOD Luke chapter one, verses 34 - 38 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since 1 am a virgin?" The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Sothe Holyonetobebornwill be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth, your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she whowassaid to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impos sible with God.’’ 1 am the Lord’s servant, Mary answered. “May it be tomeasy ou have said.’’Then the angel left her. The statement in verse 37 is one we need to remember all year, not just at Christmas. That statement is true no matter what the circumstan ces. Mary and Elizabeth were com plete opposites if you compare their circumstances. Mary was young probably in her teenage years. She was unmarried and a virgin. Eliza beth was married and in her old age. Twoextremesyetboth were going to haveachild.Godisnotlimitedby circumstances. If we b ilieve that w hat holds us back from accomplish ing great things for God. Someone might say we are afraid of failure, and if we are then we really don’t believe “For nothing is impossible with God." That is true for some but I want to look at another reason. I believe some are more afraid of success than failure. What would they be afraid of. First I believe that they don’t want success because it will involve more work and responsibility. Once you succeed people expect it of you, which will involve more work and more pressure to keep on succeed ing. For example, a rookie athlete can go through this. He has a fantastic rookie season. Next year then he is not only expected to match his previous year but to exceed it because now he has experience. With success comes work, responsi bility and pressure. Secondly, I believe some are afraid of success because we are afraid we will get arrogant and proud. We do not like arrogant people in any area whether it be sports, business, politics, etc. Some don’twant to succeed because of the fear of becoming proud. It is possible to do great things for God and keep a humble attitude. Mary did. Mary realized that having this child would bring her some honor. Verse 48, “For he has been mindful of the humble state of his s impossible with God I a servant. From now on all genera- good iob. You sav vou are biased. :servant. From now on all genera tio ns will call me blessed. ” Mary accepted the fact that this would bring her honour yet she never became proud because she had an attitude of gratitude. The third reason I believe some are afraid ofsuccess is they don’t believe they deserve it. It is like when a spouse tells vou that yoii did a good job. Yous ay you are biased. Mary did not argue with God and say lam notworthy;forthis Lord find someone else who is more deserving or better equipped to do the job. Mary said in Verse 38, “May it be to me as you have said.” Let’s not be afraid of success and go and do great things for God. For Nothing is impossible with God.
