Blyth Atoms win
Zurich tournee crown
BY RUSTY BLADES
The Blyth Atoms had a busy
schedule last week as they hosted
Goderich in an exhibition game and
also participated in the Zurich Atom
tournament.
On Wednesday, December 7 the
Blyth Atoms were very gracious
hosts as Goderich powered their way
toa6-l win. Goderich built a 2-0 lead
in the first period before Blyth
scored their only goal of the game.
Scott Arthur notched the power play
goal after being set up by Jason
Rutledge and Brian McNichol.
Goderich added one second peri
od goal to set up a wild third frame.
Penalties played a major role in the
third period as some of the players
forgot about hockey. Goderich scor
ed three unanswered power play
goals as they whipped Blyth 6-1.
The Atoms travelled to Zurich last
weekend to try to get their game in
order. They opened the tourney
against Zurich on Friday, Dec. 9 and
escaped with an entertaining 8-7
shoot-out victory. The teams were
tied 5-5 after regulation time as
neither team could pull away.
Brad Anderson’s perserverance
paid off as he opened the scoring
with an assist to Ryan Chamney.
Brian McNichol scored the second
goal from Christopher How son.
Zurich stormed back to take a 3-2
lead before Jason Rutledge tied the
game on a backhander assisted by
Tim Cowan and Ryan Chamney. The
teams traded goals the rest of the
way as Brian McNichol scored his
second from Tim Cowan and Henry
Bos scored on his own rebound
assisted by Brian McNichol.
The teams played through a
scoreless overtime period to set up a
nerve wracking shoot-out. Six shoo
ters were needed to break the tie as
Blyth outscored Zurich 3 - 2 to secure
an 8-7 win. Scoring for Blyth were
Brian McNichol, Christopher How-
son and Brad Anderson. Mike
deJong did a super job in the Blyth
net in the shoot-out to send Blyth into
the championship round.
Their seco nd game was again st
Huron Park on Saturday as they
stormed to a 6-1 lead and held off a
Huron Park rally in a 7-5 win. Huron
Park took an early lead but luck was
on Bly th's side as their first two goals
deflected off Huron Park players.
Ryan Chamney tied the game
assisted by Scott Arthur. Brian
McNichol set up Brad Anderson for a
power play goal as Brad's point shot
deflected into the net. Brian McNi
chol and Christopher Howson then
set up Bly th's second power play

ed two close games in the Zurich
Atom Tournament on the weekend,
twice losing good leads.
The team travelled south for a
game Friday night against Huron
Park and saw their lead evaporate as
Huron Park scored six unanswered
third-period goals for an 8-5 win.
Randy Buerermann got Brussels off
to the right start when he scored

less than a minute later when David
Lewington scored from Trevor Ma-

to theleadjust 13 seconds later to
leave Brussels with a 5-2 lead at the
end of two periods.
That was to be the last good news
however as Huron Park blasted six
third-period goals to take the win.
The team headed south again
Saturday toplay an exciting close

the scoring just 12 seconds into the
game but the Brussels boys didn’t let

second period but Mike Dauphin
scored an unassisted goal to give
Brussels back its lead. Trevor
Machan scored his third goal of the
gamefrom Jamie Smith to widen the
lead. Brussels then seemed to have a
solid lead when Mike Dauphin
scored his second unassisted goal of
the game with 7:10 left in the second.
But for the second game in a rou

scored three straight goals before
the endof the second to tie the score,

time this year, the talented duo also

both the Sectional and Divisional

during the 1987-88 season.
The area’s other figure skating
Champions, Kevin Wheeler of RR5,
Brussels and his Senior Pairs
partner, Michelle Menzies of Pre
ston, skated an exhibition only at
Brantford because of a lack of senior
competition, and will automatically
advance to the Divisionals next
month.
Mr. Wheeler and Miss Menzies
have just returned from internation
al competition at Skate America at
Portland, Maine and at Skate Russia
in Leningrad, placing fifth in their
division in both countries, following
a knee injury suffered by Mr.
Wheeler in practice. In 1986 and
1987 the pair won both gold and
silver medals in international com
petition, and narrowly missed a
berth on Canada’s Olympic team at
Calgary last year, although they did
from Mike Dauphin. But Zurich
came back to take the lead and hold
on for a 7-6 win.
