Peter, Kerrie strike gold again Blyth Atoms win Zurich tournee crown BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Atoms had a busy schedule last week as they hosted Goderich in an exhibition game and also participated in the Zurich Atom tournament. On Wednesday, December 7 the Blyth Atoms were very gracious hosts as Goderich powered their way toa6-l win. Goderich built a 2-0 lead in the first period before Blyth scored their only goal of the game. Scott Arthur notched the power play goal after being set up by Jason Rutledge and Brian McNichol. Goderich added one second peri od goal to set up a wild third frame. Penalties played a major role in the third period as some of the players forgot about hockey. Goderich scor ed three unanswered power play goals as they whipped Blyth 6-1. The Atoms travelled to Zurich last weekend to try to get their game in order. They opened the tourney against Zurich on Friday, Dec. 9 and escaped with an entertaining 8-7 shoot-out victory. The teams were tied 5-5 after regulation time as neither team could pull away. Brad Anderson’s perserverance paid off as he opened the scoring with an assist to Ryan Chamney. Brian McNichol scored the second goal from Christopher How son. Zurich stormed back to take a 3-2 lead before Jason Rutledge tied the game on a backhander assisted by Tim Cowan and Ryan Chamney. The teams traded goals the rest of the way as Brian McNichol scored his second from Tim Cowan and Henry Bos scored on his own rebound assisted by Brian McNichol. The teams played through a scoreless overtime period to set up a nerve wracking shoot-out. Six shoo ters were needed to break the tie as Blyth outscored Zurich 3 - 2 to secure an 8-7 win. Scoring for Blyth were Brian McNichol, Christopher How- son and Brad Anderson. Mike deJong did a super job in the Blyth net in the shoot-out to send Blyth into the championship round. Their seco nd game was again st Huron Park on Saturday as they stormed to a 6-1 lead and held off a Huron Park rally in a 7-5 win. Huron Park took an early lead but luck was on Bly th's side as their first two goals deflected off Huron Park players. Ryan Chamney tied the game assisted by Scott Arthur. Brian McNichol set up Brad Anderson for a power play goal as Brad's point shot deflected into the net.
