The hunt, which went from Nov. 7 - 10, was successful due to the fact the deer population is up because of several seasons of mild winters. Ministry representative Kevin Coultes estimates 1492 hunters, 367 of which had farmer-landowner tags, bagged 425 deer. This figure is up from the estimated 350 deer killed in last year’s hunt. The previous year a total of 1312 tags were issued. From this year’s figure, 295 deer were brought into check stations to have biological measurements tak en. The ministry gives hunters crests for jawbones and hats for hides brought in. The largest deer brought to the check station in this year’s hunt weighed 226 pounds. This year 1146 hunters got their licences and applied for the draw for hunting tags in which 1125 hunters were chosen.
