White Gift service held
at Knox church
Familiar Christmas Carols re
sounded on the morning air from
Knox United Church on Sunday,
December 11 as the many members
and friends congregated to celebrate
White Gift Sunday.
The sanctuary was tastefully
decorated with poinsettias, red and
white flower arrangements, a tree
aglow and lighted tapers in the
candelabra. Two silver baskets of
Christmas blooms and cedar boughs
added to the festive decorations.
A piano-organ prelude of Christ
mas numbers with Mrs. Leslie
Shaw, pianist and Mrs. George
Procter, organist, was presented.
The Prayer of Approach was given
by Rev. John G. Roberts, followed by
the Processional hymn “0 Come All
Ye Faithful”. Psalm 40 was read
responsively as Rev. Roberts lit the
third Advent Candle. The minister
chose Scripture Reading from Acts
3, which relates the story of the lame
man at the temple gate begging for
alms and included Peter and John’s
reply.
The 14-voicechildren’s choir sang
as their anthems “Go Tell it on the
Mountain’’, “Away in a Manger,”
“Come on Ring those Bells”, and
“Infant Holy, Infant Lowly”, with
organ accompaniment.
A report on the Foster Child,
Bernard of Kenya Africa, was given
by the School Superintendent, Mrs.
Ruth Gordon. She stated, “He is a
Class five pupil, that 100 per cent of
the children are mal-nourished, no
records are kept; the money used is
the Kenyan shilling; foster children
wear uniforms; children earn a small
amountofmoneybycleaning and
washing. A letter of thanks had been
received by the Belgrave Sunday
School.
The ushers and offering stewards
were Kenneth Procter, Ross Hig
gins, Mark Coultes and David
McKee. The White Gift baskets
were passed by Jennifer Cook and
Todd Walker.
The choir members occupied the
central front pews to receive the
message. This was a Question and
Answer form, from which the group
learned that Peter had no money but
gave what he had. Giving is always
important; not necessarily monetary
giving but “faith”. Faithfulness,
and Commitment, Witness and
Service, by attendance are import
ant. Each person learns daily
throughout his life. Appropriate
hymns were sung during the service.
