[A] Clerk-Treasurer Village of Brussels. If her shopping habits are any indication, Brussels taxpayers should be able to expect fast action from new councillor Mary Stretton. Monday night, pinch-shopping for her mother-in-law Marguerite Stretton in the Brussels Merchants’ Shopping Spree she set a new record by scooping up $395 worth of groceries in 30 seconds in each of Brussels two food markets. Here she hurls a frozen turkey Into one shopping cart while Al Teeft of Brussels EMA waits with another cart to be filled. Spectators are welcome to watch the excitement of the next spree, Monday at 6 p.m. rt Zoning by-law on Blyth agenda Continued from page 6 the year. The former councillors volunteered their services as an advisory committee to save the new councillors from going over the same ground the old council had already covered in earlier discussions. Council also expressed willing ness to have two former councillors continue on with projects they had been involved with. William Mann ing had volunteered to remain as the village’s representative on the Maitland Valley Conservation Au thority and had also offered to oversee the tree planting program at least for this spring since he had ordered the trees last fall for spring planting Bev Elliott had offered to help continue the crab-apple tree planting project she had initiated while on council. “The more assistance we get the better,” Councillor Medd said. Appointments to various commit tees and boards will be made later this month. In the meantime Council is looking for two ratepayers inter ested in being representatives on the Blyth and District Community Cen tre Board. Blyth is entitled to two councillors and two ratepayer repre sentatives on the board but until now has never had ratepayer reps. The Blyth and District Fire Area Board had a surplus on its operations for the year and has asked the councils that support it to designate the unused portion of their levies as reserve funds for future fire needs. Reeve Wasson praised the fire department for its work. “Probably Blyth has the most envied (Fire) Boardin the county for the equip ment provided, the service and the cost,” he said. Meanwhile Reeve Wasson indi cated Blyth will look with caution on plans to institute recycling in the village. “Wehavetobe aware of whatwe’re volunteering our citizens to do,” he said, regarding the amount of sorting of garbage involved in recycling. “I only w ant to be a leader if if s going to be good for the people. I'm not in it for the publicity,” he said. Councillor Medd said he thought it would be a good idea if a public meeting was held before recycling was brought in so that the opinion of the public could be sampled. Reeve Wasson said he already knew what the opinion of the public was, that if they could have their way thev’d be 109 Dcr ce nt in favour of burnable garbage that allows some burning at the landfill site and thus reduces the amount of garbage that has to be burned.
