The scene took place in a Mexican village. The choir loft and chancel were beautifully transformed to look like a village in Mexico. A huge backdrop painted by Deanna and Shannon Snell and Don Kai, banked by many white and red poinsettias and white daisy mums, all looked very real. Rick Howson, Angela Schneider and Anita Gross introduced the pageant with their trumpets. Jerrod Button brought his very stubborn donkey, built by Don Kai, up the centre aisle of the church saying that he would have to get rid of him. There were groups of peasants, and Mexicans in costume. John Ramirez attempted to dispose of the donkey called “the small one” for his friend. David Hessel and Ian Caldwell acted as singing auc tioneers. The junior and intermediate choirs, with Gail Lear at the piano, sang appropriate songs throughout the pageant. Erin Bolger tried to explain why donkeys were so stubborn, espe cially at Christmas. This was done by Joseph and Mary using a donkey to travel to Bethlehem and after the birth of Jesus, hordes of angels, shepherds and wisemen appeared. (Everyone in the Sunday School had a part to play). Therefore, she said, that the legend was that the donkey, seeing all the wonderful happen ings, had ever since thought them selves very important. It was also White Gift Sunday. Susan Howson thanked all who had helped and presented a floral gift to Norma and Lorenzo Ramirez in appreciation for the monthly birth day cakes. Special thanks was tendered to Gail Lear for filling in on short notice. The children were all given a treat after close of the service. The grade four boys’ class acted as ushers.
