Blyth Atoms win 2 more games BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Atoms continued their ice odessy last week as they recorded two more wins in regular season play. Last Wednesday, Nov. 30, they hosted a fiesty Zurich squad in a 3-1 nailbiter. Christopher Howson and Henry Bos set up Blyth’s first goal midway through the first period. Brian McNichol banked the puck off the goalie and into the net with a pass outfrom behind the Zurich goal tender. Zurich tied the game with only 58 seconds left in the first period but Blyth restored their one goal lead before the period expired. Jonathan Collins and Henry Bos found Ryan Chamney at the edge of the crease. Ryan’s backhander went over the fallen Zurich puckstopper with 38 seconds remaining. Blyth upped their lead to 3-1 with an insurance goal in the final minute of the second period. Henry Bos fired a slapshot past a screened goaltender with assists from Scott Arthur and Ryan Chamney. Strong goaltending by Chris Lee and Mike de Jong played a large part in this game as their cat-like reflexes kept the Zurich offence in neutral for much of the game, including a couple of break-aways in the final period. Thanks to them, Blyth held on for a 3-1 win. On Saturday, Dec. 3 the Atoms journeyed to Brussels where they had their first encounter of the season with Elma-Logan. Forthe second game in a row, Blyth’s Ministerof Defence Peter Craig, had to be content with listening to the game on the radio at home as he continues to battle knee problems. However, the remaining rear guards pulled up the slack in a convincing9-1 blowout. Blyth built a 2-0 first period lead as Scott Arthur scored from Jonathan Collins and Ryan Chamney and then Brian McNichol scored his first goal of the game from Henry Bos and Brad Anderson. Blyth pulled away in the second stanza with five unanswered goals. Jason Rutledge scored on a break- away assistedby Ryan Chamney. Henry Bos capitalized on some Elma Logan miscues with assists from Christopher Howson and Brian McNichol. Ryan Chamney then put one in off the post with help from Jason Rutledge and Tim Cowan. Scott Arthur scored his second goal of the game on a two-man power play thanks to Brad Anderson and Ryan Chamney. Brian McNichol closed out the second period scoring spree with another Blyth power play goal, with Henry Bos assisting. Jason Rutledge scored Blyth’s eighth goal of the game midway through the third with linemates Ryan Chamney and Scott Arthur notching helpers. Once again the team lost another shut-out bid late in the third period as the Elma Logan fans had their only chance to cheer all game. Sniper Brian McNichol closed out the scoring in the final minute as he recorded another hat-trick on a short-handed tally with an assist to Christopher Howson as the game ended 9-1 in Blyth’s favour. The skinny saga continues this week as the Atoms host Goderich in an exhibition encounter on Decem ber 7 and they travel to Zurich this weekend searching for a tournament triumph.
