Marijuana case held over to January court session
Federal prosecutor Randy Evans
was successful in his plea to Judge
R.G.E. Hunter at Wingham District
Court on October 26 to have a matter
involving the cultivation of mari
juana set over for election of plea
until January 25, pending the
completion of a preliminary enquiry.
Harry and George Singh of RR 2,
Baden were charged with cultivating
a narcotic after Wingham OPP
discovered a large number of
marijuana plants, with a projected
street value of $150,000, growing in
a secluded area of Grey Township,
and are expected to enter a guilty
plea. Charges have been dropped
against a third adult originally
thought to be involved in the case.
David L. Riley of Teeswater also
appeared before Judge tv
plead guilty to one charge of assault
against another man as the result of a
“gravel pit party” held north of
Wingham last June, but received a
suspended sentence and 12 months
probation in the matter.
However, Judge Hunter was not
as lenient after Mr. Riley also pled
guilty to three other unrelated
charges, sentencing him to 15 days
in prison as the result of his causing a
disturbance by fighting at the Mac’s
Milk Store in Wingham last April,
and fining him a total of $200 on
separate charges of possession of a
narcotic and of failing to appear at a
police station, both laid last May.
Shawn Wayne Hackett of RR 7,
Lucknow and John Richard Moffatt
of Wroxeter appeared in court to
both enter guilty pleas in connection
with an incident at the Wingham
Golf and Curling Club last May. The
two were charged jointly with one
count each of break, enter and theft
and of possession of stolen property,
while Mr. Hackett also pleaded
guilty to further and unreleated
charges of theft and possession of
stolen property involving a tent-trai-
ler taken from Howick Twp. last
June.
Taking intoconsideration that Mr.
Moffatt, a University of Waterloo
student, had since made restitution
to the Wing ham Golf Club for his
part in the incident, Judge Hunter
fined him $500 and put him on
probation for 12 months. At the same
time he ordered Mr. Hackett, also a
student, to return on November 23
for sentencing.
Taking into consideration all the
facts in a charge of arson laid last
March against Andrew Phelan,
formerly of RR 2, Blyth, Judge
Huntersuspendedthe passing of
sentence and put the youth on two
years probation, providing he abides
by the recommendations of his
probation officer.
Ronald Langille of RR 1, Belgrave
pled guilty to two counts of
representing another person in a
liquor-related incident last April,
and was ordered to return to court on
November 23 for sentencing.

but is too tame for an audience
looking for unrestricted hijinks like
the Porky’s or Animal House

commercialism seems to have been
turning the ambiguous ending of the
stage play into happy (well sort of)
endings in the movie.

the story is still going untold.

and arson as the result of a fire at the
Brussels Legion last July. In addi
tion, Mr. Cowie pled not guilty to
separate charges of causing wilful
damage and of taking a motor
vehicle without permission, both in
Wingham, last June, and will face
trial in the matter on January 25.
Barry William Comeau, formerly
of Walton, also appeared before
Judge Hunter in September for
election of plea after telling the
court that he would not be seeking a
trial, but was remanded to January
25 when his lawyer failed to appear
in court. Mr. Comeau faces several
weapons-related charges as the
result of a four-hour stand-off with
police in Walton last June.
