Atoms win one, tie one Bulls split weekend games The Brussels Bulls defied the odds and upset the Tavistock Braves 8-6 Friday night in Tavistock. Playing hockey in Tavistock is equivalent to playing hockey on the Brussels wadingpool. There just ain’t any room to move, a feature driven home by thefactTavistockalwayshas a large aggressive team built for their home ice. Sports Blyth Novice A's get first league win Early in the hockey season, Blyth Novice A team played three exhibi­ tion games. They split two games with Wingham losing 6-4 and winning 4-2. They travelled to Clinton andplayedastronggame but lost a close match 2 to 1. Jeff Cowan scored Blyth’s lone goal, set up by Darryl Bromley. Great goaltending and good defence kept this game low scoring. Blyth then started league play. Hosting one of the strongest novice teams around. Seaforth scored first, but not to be out-done Corey Shannon scored on an end-to-end rush, to tie the game at the end of the first period. Blyth fell asleep in the second and Seaforth slapped in five straight goals. Blyth came alive in the third period with Jeff Ferguson scoring. But Seaforth added two more to bring the final score 8-2 for Seaforth. Blyth then travelled to Milverton on Friday, Nov. 11 and lost 2-0. before travelling back to Seaforth the next day and lost 9-0. Blyth needed some offence, to get their first league win under their belt. On Saturday, Nov. 19 Goderich came to Blyth, and Blyth was keen for their first league w in. Ronnie Abell-Rinn got Blyth on th*' scnr< board first, on a setup by Jeff Cowan. Darryl Bromley found the net. as he scored his first novice hat-trick. His firs- goal assisted by Corey Shannon Ken Jacklin opened the scoring on assists from Joel Baker and Paul Coultes followed by a Marty Rut­ ledgepowerplay goal setup by Brian Campbell and Ron Strome. However Tavistock regrouped and fired three consecutive goals for a 3-2 lead after one period. The Bulls hit the scoreboard and Dan Chamney. His second goal setup by Dan Chamney and Michael Haggitt and his third marker assisted by Greg Blok. Goderich’s lone goal came on a powerplay. Jeff Cowan finished the game on a nice break-away effort, setup by Mark Wilson. Shane Burkholder played his normal strong game in net. Blyth Novice A plays next Saturday, Nov. 26at 1:30p.m. in Blyth against Listowel and hope to keep their winning ways. They are also in the Seaforth Novice Tourna­ ment next Sunday, Nov. 27. Blyth Tykes beat Belqrave The Blvth Tyke’s opened their regular season schedule on Saturday wi»h a 5-3 win over Belgrave. Jerenic} Van Aniersfoort led Blyth with three goals a -d singles w< m to < inis rarter and Jamie Black. Peter Irwin scored Belgrave's three goals. Bryce Toll provided strong goaltending for the winners. The Blvth team travels to Bayfield this Sat urday morning for a 9 o’clock game. quickly in the second period as Campbell scored from Rutledge and Mike Vincent at the 39 second mark. Tavistock again took the lead before the Bulls’ powerplay clicked twice, Rutledge from Campbell and Strome from Vincent and Rutledge for a 5-4 lead after two periods. Bob McMillan added to the lead early in the third, setup by Rutledge and Talsma only to have Tavistock reply a minute later. Sean Kieffer notched the game winner on assists from Randy Bauman and Talsma and minutes later Talsma scored an insurance goal on powerplay passes from Rutledge and Vincent. Tavi­ stock ended the scoring with a late goal at the 18:12 mark. Murray Townsend faced 36 shots for the win while Brussels fired 46 shots at the Tavistock, goal. Sunday afternoon the Bulls wast­ ed a three goal game by Marty Rutledge losing to the visiting Exeter Hawks 7-4. Exeter opened the scoring on the powerplay but Rutledge quickly tied the score setup by Campbell and Strome. Exeter scored twice in 15 seconds while a Rutledge powerplay shot from Talsma and Nigel Taylor closed the gap to 3-2 Exeter after 20 minutes. Rutledge tied the score at three apiece again on assists from Camp­ bell and Strome. Exeter notched a powerplay marker but the Bulls once again evened the count as Vincent scored from Rutledge and Talsma for a 4-4 tie after 40 minutes. A fired-up Exeter squad dominat­ ed the third period scoring three times for a 7-4 victory. Jeff McGavin took the loss facing 42 shots while Brussels fired 27 shots at the Exet. i goal. Congratulations to Marty Rut­ ledge on a superb offensive perfor­ mance notching five goals and five assists for a 10 point weekend. Also special mention to all the Bulls who, after arriving home from Tavistock at 12:30 Friday night, all made itto coach Coulter's 7 a.m. Saturday morning skate. The Wellesley Apple Jacks come to tow n Sunday for a 2:00 start. Brussels Atom rep team played a rare 0-0 tie with Elma-Logan on their home ice in Brussels Friday night. The game saw good fast action but neither team could score. Saturday night the team journey­ ed to Huron Park and came home with a 5-3 win. After Huron Park took a 1-0 first period lead, Jamie Smith scored from Dave Lewington at 3:20 of the second period to tie the game. Huron Park came right back to score at 4:17 but Dave Lewington tied the Blyth Rep Atoms score 2 victories BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Atoms played two solid games last week and, as a result, added two more wins to their record. Blyth overcame some early game jitters last Wednesday, November 16 before rebounding for a solid 5-2 exhibition win over a strong Clinton squad. Clinton scored 30 seconds into the game but Jason Rutledge tied the game for Blyth three minutes later with assists from Ryan Chamney and Peter Craig. Clinton quickly scored to take the lead again but Blyth scored two more goals of their own before the first period ended as they began to dominate the contest. Jason Rutledge and Ryan Cham­ ney set up Scott Arthur who quickly tied the game as the Clinton goalie was trapped out of position. Christo­ pher Howson then scored the winner as Brad Anderson made some nifty moves from the blueline to the goal crease to set him up. Peter Craig added an unassisted marker midway through the second period as he stole the puck deep in the Clinton zone and put a high shot over the goalie’s shoulder. Scott Arthur scored a powerplay goal for Blyth late in the period as he one-timed a perfect goal mouth pass from Jason Rutledge to end the game scoring. The teams played a scoreless third frame as Blyth recorded a strong 5-2 victory. The Atoms then travelled to Huron Park Friday, November 18 where they were equally impressive in a 6-1 win, as they scored two goals in every period. Christopher How- son was positioned perfectly in front of the net to score Blyth’s first goal on a power play, with an assist from Brian McNichol. With only 33 seconds left in the opening period, Jason Rutledge made a perfect pass to send Ryan Chamneyinaloneon the Huron Park goaltender. Ryan made this encoun­ ter no contest as he upped the score to 2-0. The Brussels EMA store was recently chosen by Nabisco Foods as the cn.ohunutprn Onrin winner of its “SuddoH Loral Soort” campaign, while score a£ain at 5:28 of the second. Huron Park went ahead again at 4:20 of the third but Brussels came back with three straight goals to take the victory. Jamie Smith’s second goal of the game from Grant Jarvis and Shane Wilson tied the score just 11 seconds after the Huron Park goal. Two minutes later it was Trevor Machan putting Brussels ahead with an assist from Randy Beuermann. Another minute later Randy Beuer­ mann wrapped up the scoring with an assist from Brad Mulvey. Early in the second period Brian McNichol blasted the puck over the fallen, and shell-shocked, opposi­ tion goalie for a 3-0 If ’.Blyth’s fourth goal was scored ,n textbook fashion as Ryan Cham, ey set up Peter Craig’s point shot that was deflected in front of the goal by Jason Rutledge. The Scoring Machine went into actionfor goal numberS as Henry Bos stole the puck and scored on a breakaway. Goaltenders Chris Lee and Mike de Jong’s bid for a shared shut-out was thwarted late in the game but Blyth closed out the game scoring as Brian McNichol’s screen­ ed shotfound the mark with an assist from Christopher Howson. The team played two well-execut­ ed games last week and hopefully the momentum will continue this week as they play a return match in Clinton on Tuesday, November 22 and they host Brussels tonight, Wednesday, November 23 at 7:15. Come on down to the arena this season and support all the minor hockey players as they strive for excellence in a game they dearly love. Houseleague Atoms drop 5-3 decision Brussels Houseleague Atoms visited Wingham for an exhibition gamcSundayandputupagood fight before losing 5-3 to the home team. After Wingham took an early lead, Troy Williams got Brussels back even again with a goal from Pete Wall. The period ended 1-1. Wingham scored twice in the second periodtotake a lead then scored early in the third to appear to have the game under control. But Brussels battled back with goals by Tom Pearson and Jeff Elliott to close the gap before Wingham finally scored with two minutes left in the game for the final margin.
