News WEMADEITFROM THE GRAPEVINE by Heidi Scrimgeo or and Danielle McDougall As a special art activity, the grade 7 and 8 class made grapevine wreaths varying in design from Christmas to all-occasion creations. The grapevine was collected by Mrs. Hulley and company and Mr. Allan Webster. With Mrs. Jo-Ann Collins, our Area Resource Teacher, demonstra ting, the students started with a grapevine circle and weaved grape vine around it. This was done outside on the school lawn. When we completed a wreath and came inside, we learned how to make bows. We decorated the wreaths with purchased items or dried flowers and weeds donated by Mrs. Collins. The decorations were glued on by Mrs. Kolkman and her trusty glue gun. The activity caused great enthusiasm among the students in other grades. Many of them made wreaths from the discarded material left on the lawn, making any cleanup unnecessary. DINOSAURS AND MORE DINOSAURS by Tina Burkholder and Erica Clark The grade twos have been learn ing about dinosaurs. They made shadow boxes with plasticene dino saurs, drew pictures, wrote booklets and watched films. Some of the students’ favourite dinosaurs are are Brontosauras, Tyranosauras Rex, and the Stegosauras. They also have read many books about dino saurs. John and Angie Walden brought some plastic dinosaurs to school and Mrs. Little had several fossils for them to look at. Every recess the grade twos have been outside looking for fossils among the stones. Mrs. Little thinks she should send them all to Drumheller, Alta, to practise their skills. TWO EXTRA, EXTRAS! By Sarah Rouw and Stephanie Lentz During the past three weeks, Donna Giousher and Darlene Buf- finga, Co-op students from C.H.S.S. have been assisting in the primary grades at Blyth Public School. Co-operative education gives the students an opportunity to develop responsibility, initiative and self confidence. As well, the students gain credits towards their diploma. Donna, the daughter of Edith and Stanley Giousher of Blyth, helps students with spelling and reading skills. She also helps teachers prepare materials and assists child ren with handicrafts in Kindergar ten. The co-op students had a choice of three places they wanted to go. Donna decided on Blyth P.S. because she lives hereand knows most of the teachers and students. She enjoys the program and hopes to find it useful for her future career choice. Darlene, the daughter of Mary and Albert Buffinga of Londesboro, prepares materials for the teachers and helps with group work in Grade 1 and 2. Darlene chose to do her Co-op time at a school because she hopes to work with young children, and she was able to arrange transportation to Blyth. Darlene enjoys working with the primary children in small groups on a one to one basis. Our Co-op students are here two or three mornings each week. They are very popular with students and staff Mike. THANK YOU for your support at the polls. They are painting fall pictures and they are making fall booklets. Also, they are making designs with leaves. We asked some students what they thought about fall and here is what they said: Curtis Knight, Justin Campbell and Vicky Black think that fall is about leaves falling from the trees and changing their colour. Jolene Black said it was when pumpkins ripen. Tyler Fenton says it is when squirrels gather nuts. Tim Jerva thought that it was when the corn was ready. Myron Hussey said that the early fall fruits and vegetables are ready. Tania Pletch said it was when all the nuts fall off the trees. Jodi Snowden likes fall because she can rake piles of leaves andjumpin them. Robby La Rose said that he likes to rake leaves too. Craig Marks likes it when the cats roll around in the leaves. Julie Hopper said that fall was when the birds fly south. Here is a poem the Kindergartens are learning about leaves. LEAVES! LEAVES! Leaves! Leaves!
