Bulls streak hits the skids with losses The Brussels Curling Club cele­ brated its 25th Anniversary on Saturday, with all present and former members invited to curl two 6-end games, with a dinner and dance being held in the evening. The president of the club, Doug Shold ice, presented prizes to the Blyth Atoms split games BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Atoms rep team took their show on the road last week as they split a pair of games. Last Wednesday, November 9 they ventured to Zurich and domi­ nated in a strong 10-2 triumph. Blyth took a 2-0 first period lead as both Peter Craig and Christopher How- son notched unassisted goals. Blyth doubled the lead to 4-0 early in the second frame as Scott Arthur scored with help from Peter Craig. Peter then scored on the powerplay after being set up by Ryan Chamney and Jason Rutledge. Although Zurich broke Blyth’s shut-out bid in the second period Blyth stormed the opposition net in the third period on their way to the Belgrave Novice team wins Belgrave Novice Hockey team played at Goderich, November 6. David McBurney scored twice being assisted once by Wayne Fenton who also scored one in the first period and once in the second. Goderich got their lone goal in the second period. Belgrave maintained their strong lead in the third period with David McBurney scoring twice assisted once by Wayne Fenton. Peter Irwin scored the final goal. The final score was Belgrave 7, Goderich 1. Belgrave Novice played in Blyth November 7. In the first period David McBurney scored three times. Ryan Cook scored assisted bv Jeremy Campbell and Wayne Fen­ ton scored assisted by Michael McBurney. Michael Ansley got Blyth on the scoreboard in the second period. Belgrave defence kept the pressure on Blyth throughout the game but especially in the third period when they kept the puck in Blyth end a lot of the time. David McBurney scored again assisted by Jennifer Black and Wayne Fenton scored Belgrave's final goal. Blyth’s second goal was scored by Shawn Clark. Final score. Belgrave 7, Blyth 2. victory. The line of Howson, Bos and McNichol did most of the offensive damage. Christopher Howson add­ ed two more goals to complete the hat-trick while also contributing two assists. Peter Craig also completed his hat-trick in the third while also adding another assist. Brian McNi­ chol recorded two goals and two assists in the third while linemate Henry Bos notched three assists. Ryan Chamney was the other marksman for Blyth with Jason Rutledge assisting. Although the offensive work was well documented it was the defen­ sive play that made this a total team effort. Belgrave played well but lost to Zurich 14 - 0 fortheirfirstlossoftheseason. A good game was played by Tom Pfeiffer, Peter Irwin, Wayne Fen­ ton, Ryan Cook, Jason Curtis, Jeremy Campbell, Vaughn Vincent, David and Michael McBurney, Brian Sinclair and Jennifer Black. Brussels Atoms lose to Zurich Brussels Atoms proved to be a little toogood hosts Friday night when they sent Zurich home with a 3-1 victory in W.O.A.A. play. Gene Johnston got Brussels off to a good start when he converted an assist from Trevor Machan to give the home team the lead with 4:42 left in the first period but Zurich came back to tie the score before the end of the period. Zurich put the game a« ay with one goal in each of the second and third periods for the win. It w as a cleanly-played game with Brussels taking only one penalty and Zurich, two. winners. The 11 o’clock draw winners were Orval Bauer, Mary Huether, Ross Veitch, Jeff Knight Continued on page 21 Brussels Pee Wees win Brussels Pee Wees chalked up another win in the young season when they defeated Seaforth 4-2 on home ice Friday night in W.O.A.A. action. Matt Lee got the home side off to a quick start with an unassisted goal only 32 seconds into the game. With 6:52 left in the period Matt scored again with an assist from Ryan Finch. Seaforth came back with a goal with only 15 seconds left in the period to draw close. Todd Machan with Matt Lee assisting gave Brussels its two-goal lead back again with 45 seconds left in the second period. Seaforth drew close again with just under six minutes left in the third period but Todd Machan scored with assists from Matt Lee and Daniel Pearson with 2:47 left to give Brussels the 4-2 final margin. Sterling defence helped Blyth skate to an easy 8-2 win to go undefeated in the tournament. The Brussels Bulls had their five game winning streak come to a halt Wednesday night in Lucan losing to the Irish by a 9-5 score. Lucan scored early and often notching four goals in the first 10 minutes of play to take a 4-1 lead to the dressing room after 20 minutes. Marty Rutledge scored the only Brussels goal. In the second period Bill Kinahan scored on passes from Mike Vincent and Rutledge while Lucan added two of their own for a 6-2 lead after 40 minutes. Lucan increased their lead to 8-2 before the Bulls scored twice, Rutledge from Ron Strome, and Strome from Vincent and Brian Campbell. A shorthanded effort gave the Irish a 9-4 lead until Vincent’s powerplay goal from Ron Buchanan and Campbell at 19:17 ended the scoring summary. The Bulls played the first period minus a carload of skaters who were caught in rush hour traffic on their way from the U Diversity of Guelph to theLucanarena. Upon his arrival Jeff McGavin replaced Murray Townsend in goal for the second and third periods. Saturday night in Wellesley the Bulls scored a powerplay goal in each period and received outstand- ing goaltending from Murray Town­ send to defeat the Wellesley Apple Jacks 3-1. Marty Rutledge scored the only goal of the first period on assists from Strome and Vincent. Wellesley tied the score at the 7:05 mark of the second period but Rutledge’s second from Strome and Campbell returned the lead to the Bulls. Brian Campbell sealed the victory early in the third set-up by Vincent and Kevin Talsma for the well-earn­ ed 3-1 win. Wellesley outshot Brussels 42-20 in the contest. Sunday afternoon a hustling Mitchell Hawks Club defeated the hometown Bulls by a 6-4 score. Mitchell scored in the first minute of play but the Bulls rebounded with two quick goals, Campbell from Strome and Sean Kieffer followed by a Paul Coultes marker from Bruce Johnston and Dwaine Nicholls. Mitchelltiedthegamelateinthe period and took the lead early in the second before Coultes once again tied the score on a set-up by Nicholls. However, Mitchell completely dom­ inated the last 10 minutes of play scoring three times for a 6-3 lead after 40 minutes. Brian Campbell set-up Nigel Taylor for the only goal of the final period as the Mitchell Club gained a 6-4 victory. John Steffler faced 26 shots after replacing Jeff McGavin for the start of the second period. Mitchell outshot Brussels 35-21 in the game. Latest OHA stats show Marty Rutledge tied for first place atop the scoring parade. Remember Satur­ day, Nov. 26 is the Bulls annual “Meet the Players” night. Plan to attend. Friday night the Bullswill travel to Tavistock to meet the Braves. They return home to meet the Exeter Hawks Sunday at 2 p.m. Blyth Pee Wees beat Elma-Logan Blyth Pee Wees got into the win column in their second game of the season Nov. 7 by upsetting an old nemisis Elma-Logan 4-3. Mike Bromley and Jerrod Button led the way to the victory, Mike picking up two goals and two assists while Jerrod got a goal and three assists. Mike Bromley got the game off well for Blyth when Jerrod Button set him up at 7:43 of the first. Elma-Logan took advantage of a power play to score less than a minute later but then took a penalty themselves and that allowed Tyler Craig to score from Mike Bromley and Jerrod Button to give Blyth back the lead. Elma-Logan tied the score again midway through the second period but Jerrod Button set up Mike Bromley for the go-ahead goal with just six seconds left in the period. Jerrod Button gave Biyth a two-goal cushion at 8:41 of the third period and they needed it as Elma Logan scored on a power play with just over two minutes left in the game to pull close. Blyth picked up another penalty with just 24 seconds left in the game but held on for the win.
