Citizen of the Year
celebrates 90th birthday
Our congratulations, regrettably the bridge game itself - no problems
belated, go to Winona McDougall of
Maplewood Manor, Seaforth, who
celebrated on October 26 her 90th
birthday.
To be invited and able to play
bridge on this particular birthday
with the ladies presently playing in
the Blyth Senior Club, of which
Winona had been a member since
1948, made her day, which just
happened to be the Club’s regular,
dessert-bridge date.
Winona enjoyed everything that
goes along with birthday “do’s”:
the entrance of the cake with its
candles aglow - hers displayed nine;
corsages - she received two - the one
of pink roses complemented beauti
fully her light green sequin-trimmed
dress which she was wearing on
arrivalatthehostess’shome; the
services of a chauffeur - hers was a
bridge club member, no less, with a
safe driving record; and at this party,
Sunshine
Unit meets
Mary Howson and Dorothy Daer
conducted a thought-provoking wor
ship service to begin the Sunshine
Unit’s meeting of the Blyth U.C.W.
on Nov. 10. It was followed by Melda
McElroy speaking on the lives of four
Black South African Christian ladies
considered to be unsung heroines in
apartheid times.
During the report period mem
bers learned that Lenora Davidson
had sent the following messages:
sympathy to Luella McGowan,
Margaret Wasson and Mary War
wick; birthday wishes to Winona
McDougall; and get-well wishes to
Ella Carter and Rosella Rooney.
Dorothy Daer reported for Mar
jorie East the gratifying sum of
money realized from the travelling

there, for each afternoon since
moving to Maplewood Manor,
Winona has been playing bridge
with three other residents.
Another happy birthday event
awaited Winona on her arrival back
home. The next morning she was
heard to remark, “What a wonderful
day I had yesterday! How thankful I
am!”
