Back in business, Bruce McCall, far left, returned to familiar surroundings last Friday as he and his son
and partner, Ross, conducted the first sale at the former Brussels Stockyards under the name of McCall
Livestock. The McCalls are trying to get the business back on its feet following the disappearance in late
October of owner Klaus Henschel and the subsequent bankruptcy of the third largest stockyards in
Ontario. Beside Mr. McCall, above, are cattle buyers George Vivien of Mitchell, Ken O’Neil of St. Thomas
and Peter Dawson of Canada Packers, Burlington.

changes will be made to the
organization except that there will
be a new boss. Mr. Watts will retain
his licence in Brussels, while Mrs.
Watts will remain as manager of the
Gorrie facility, atleastforafew more
weeks.
“You’re not going to get rid of us
that easily,’’ Mr. Watts joked.
“We’re not leaving the commun
ity.’’ The Watts have taken up
residence in a new motor home just
purchased, and plan to leave on
Boxing Day to spend the winter
months cruising the sun belt of
Florida, Texas and Arizona, taking
life “ one day at a time, ’ ’ according to
Mr. Watts. They plan to return to
Brussels in April, and will decide
from there the future direction of
their lives.
The Watts family have been part
of the community since February 21,
1969, when they purchased the
lovely ‘ ‘Belleview House’ ’ overlook -
ing the Maitland River, and took
over the D.A. Rann Funeral Chapel
and Furniture Store on Turnberry
Street where Maitland Valley Insur
ance is now located. In 1979, they
closed the furniture store, leased the
building to the Royal Bank, and built
a new funeral chapel at their home.
In 1979 they purchased the former
Gordon Moir Funeral Home in
Gorrie, which has been operated by
Mrs. Watts ever since.
Max Watts was brought up in
Belleville, where he joined the
Belleville Burial Company as an
apprentice at the age of 14, later
moving on to a large funeral home in
Brantford. Mrs. Watts obtained her
licence when the family moved to
Brussels in 1969.
The Brussels funeral home has
been an integral part of the
community for the past 11 years,
having been started by Richard
Leatherdale in 1877, five years after
Brussels’ incorporation as a village.
Mr. Leatherdale operated the busi

home, where Mrs. Glenna Stephens
now lives, until 1908, when it was
sold to the Malcolm Walker family,
soon tobe joined by a Mr. Black, and
operated as the Walker and Black
Funeral Home until 1931, when it
