SPECIAL THANKS to our MODELS & HELPERS Back in business, Bruce McCall, far left, returned to familiar surroundings last Friday as he and his son and partner, Ross, conducted the first sale at the former Brussels Stockyards under the name of McCall Livestock. The McCalls are trying to get the business back on its feet following the disappearance in late October of owner Klaus Henschel and the subsequent bankruptcy of the third largest stockyards in Ontario. Beside Mr. McCall, above, are cattle buyers George Vivien of Mitchell, Ken O’Neil of St. Thomas and Peter Dawson of Canada Packers, Burlington. Max, Barb Watts sell business The Watts Funeral Homes of Brussels and Gorrie have been sold “lock, stock and barrel’’ to a new owner, Stephen Betts of Orangeville and Toronto, who moved into the attached residence and took over the reins of the corporation yesterday (Tuesday). Mrs. Lee, Mrs. Nevitt, Mrs. Marconina, and Mrs. Sinclair were members of Mar­ garet’s staff on the obstetrics department of St. Joseph’s Hospi­ tal . Mrs. Lee celebrated her 85th birthday with the ladies. The happy visit ended with a pleasant tour of our village. Leanne Armstrong was honoured to receive the Paul V. Tiffin Memorial Scholarship at the F. E. Madill Secondary School Com­ mencement Exercises. Leanne, who was also an Ontario Scholar also received a school letter. Joyce, Rodger, Jonathon and Sarah Tipple spent the weekend with Mary and Murray Huether. They alongwith Brian, Dianne, Sheri, Mary and Murray Huether attended the 40th wedding anniversary cele­ bration in honour of Dave and Dorothy Miller of Stratford which was celebrated at Cranbrook Com­ munity Centre on Saturday after­ noon and evening. Dorothy is Murray’s sister. changes will be made to the organization except that there will be a new boss. Mr. Watts will retain his licence in Brussels, while Mrs. Watts will remain as manager of the Gorrie facility, atleastforafew more weeks. “You’re not going to get rid of us that easily,’’ Mr. Watts joked. “We’re not leaving the commun­ ity.’’ The Watts have taken up residence in a new motor home just purchased, and plan to leave on Boxing Day to spend the winter months cruising the sun belt of Florida, Texas and Arizona, taking life “ one day at a time, ’ ’ according to Mr. Watts. They plan to return to Brussels in April, and will decide from there the future direction of their lives. The Watts family have been part of the community since February 21, 1969, when they purchased the lovely ‘ ‘Belleview House’ ’ overlook - ing the Maitland River, and took over the D.A. Rann Funeral Chapel and Furniture Store on Turnberry Street where Maitland Valley Insur­ ance is now located. In 1979, they closed the furniture store, leased the building to the Royal Bank, and built a new funeral chapel at their home. In 1979 they purchased the former Gordon Moir Funeral Home in Gorrie, which has been operated by Mrs. Watts ever since. Max Watts was brought up in Belleville, where he joined the Belleville Burial Company as an apprentice at the age of 14, later moving on to a large funeral home in Brantford. Mrs. Watts obtained her licence when the family moved to Brussels in 1969. The Brussels funeral home has been an integral part of the community for the past 11 years, having been started by Richard Leatherdale in 1877, five years after Brussels’ incorporation as a village.
