FROM OUR Fire victims get help Continued from page 1 know now - the cause has been listed as ‘unknown,’ ” he said. After being awakened by the smoke alarm, the family fled to neighbours Bill and Sylvia Steven son’s home, where they called in the alarm to the Brussels Fire Depart ment, which passed it on to Blyth in a jurisdiction call. Both departments were on the scene in record time, Chief J osling said, but there was nothing anybody could have done to save the house. The Stevensons provided the Van Beek family with shelter and nourishment until they were able to move into a friend’s vacant but furnished home in Walton Friday evening; they also spearheaded the drive to get immediate aid for the family. Mrs. Stevenson alerted neigh bours Ross Nichol and Carl McLenn an, who moved six young pigs Mrs. Van Beek was raising to the Nichol farm for temporary safety, then took the Van Beek family to the Salvation Army in Wii.gham, which was able to meet their immediate clothing needs. In addition, a bank account has been set up at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Brussels for cash donations, and CKNX radio and television organiz ed a plea for further aid. Since Friday, aid in the form of clothing, bedding, food, money and toys have been pouring in from individuals and from businesses and local service groups, and Mrs. Van Beek says they are “pretty well fixed’ ’ for the time being, except for sheets, towels and small house wares, such as cookware and cultery for such a large family. In addition, a Wroxeter-area disc jockey, Don Holmes and his wife Cindy, have offered their services free of charge if and when the community organ izes a benefit for the Van Beeks, explaining that they have played at several benefits, including the one following afire in Gorrie last year which left six families homeless. Mrs. Van Beek says that they will be able to stay at the Walton house for several months, if necessary, but says she has not had time yet to decide what her next move will be. Enquiries and further offers of aid may be made by contacting Toby Rainey atThe Citizen at 523-4792, or at home at 887-9843; while cash donations may be made to the Van Beek family at the Brussels CIBC.
