THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1988. 30 hear trustee candidates speak at Brookside BY RHEA HAMILTON-SEEGER Thirty ratepayers from East and West Wawanosh and Ashfield town ships turned out Mon day night at Brookside School to question and compliment three candidates runn ing for Board of Education Trustee. Incumbent Tony McQuail of West Wawanosh is being challenged by VickiCulbert, and Don Alton, both of Ashfield. Mr. McQuail, a farmer with two children in the school system, has served two terms as trustee for the area. He outlined his involvement on both education and management committees and how important improving the partnership between parents and teachers was to good education and teaching children about the future. Vicki Culbert described herself as a concerned mother and believes that the education system is not meeting the needs of the children, specifically that of the primary grades. As a mother of three and actively working from her home as secretary/bookkeeper she wants to see the Lord's Prayer kept in the schools and see more funds allocated for repairs in the schools. Donald Alton a farmer and father of four, is concerned about the need to teach basic reading and writing skills. Mr. Alton would also like to see better use made of the tax dollars rather than adding to the budget, would keep the Lord’s Prayer and have a more uniform curriculum Brussels WMS approaches • 75th anniversary The November meeting of Mel ville W.M.S. was held in the church parlor with 10 members and two visitors in attendance. Mrs. Helen Elliott, the President, opened the meeting with a poem on “A haze on the far horizon”. Hymns were sung with Wilma Hemingway at the piano. The W.M.S. pledge was repeated in unison followed by the Lord’s Prayer. The secretary’s report was given by Ruby Steiss and the treasurer’s report by Evelyn Mair. Isabelle Gibson and Ruby Steiss are the nominating committee to bring in a slate of officersforthe December meeting. Helen Elliott spoke about the 75th anniversary of the W.M.S. to be held in 1989 and members are to consider having a page on former members. The roll call was answer ed with a verse on forgive or forget. The scripture from Psalm 103, verses 1 -12 were read by Marguerite Krauter and she also had the meditation on ‘ accepting forgive ness” followed by prayer. The topic on Remembrance was well given by Ethel Brewer who has been a member of the Legion. Ladies for 36 years and was dressed in her uniform for the occasion. Helen Elliott closed the meeting with prayer and a lovely lunch was served by Margaret MacLeod, Marguerite Krauter and Ruth Martin and a social time enjoyed. Former Festival staffer gets post A former publicity director of the Blyth Festival has been named Director of Marketing for Orche stra London. Barbara Hugel served as publi city director of the Festival in 1983 after working in various other capacities since 1979. She had been General Manager of the Gryphon Theatre in Barrie before taking the Londonjob. She had also been General Manager of Tapes try Music Theatre in Toronto and had worked at the Muskoka Festival. She began her new position Oct. 4. across the county. Questions ranged from teacher dismissals and procedures required to get a poor teacher out of the system to a brief history of county board of education and how and why it came about. Ratepayers found out that salary negotiations are an ongoing fact of life and once one is settled the next contract is looked at. Provincial legislation creates some problems for this largely rural area. All three candidates agreed that the matter of the Lord’s Prayer and teachers being allowed 40 consecutive minutes for lunch has created some rumblings in the electorate. Presently the board has decided to leave the opening exercises untouched until further clarification of the ruling. The teachers and the board have not made any decision on the lunch time but continue to work co-opera- • tively. Most of the questions were directed toward McQuail who con cluded that the work his young daughters were bringing home from school impressed him. He has spent considerable time visiting schools in the area and firmly believes that parents should work more closely with their children’s teachers.
