Other schools taking part were East Wawanosh, Wingham, Howick Central and Turnberry Central. Bulls keep winning THE CITIZEN. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1988. PAGE 19. The Brussels Jr. D. Bulls, behind the outstanding goaltending of Murray Townsend, continued their winning ways with a 5-4 win over the host Exeter Hawks Friday night. Marty Rutledge opened the scor­ ing on passes from Kevin Talsma and Brian Campbell only to have Exeter tie the score seconds later. A Rutledge powerplay goal again set up by Talsma and Campbell gave the Bulls a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes. The Bulls added totheir total in the second scoring three times in a seven-minute span. Jeff Earl scored his first setup by Midget teammate Steve Fritz at 9:37. A Ron Buchanan point shot dented the twine at 10:40 assisted by Jason Coulter and Dwaine Nicholls and Rutledge com­ pleted his hat-trick scoring unassist­ ed for a 5-1 lead after two periods. In the third the Bulls went “missingin action’’ allowing Exeter to score three early goals to narrow the margin to 5-4. However, Brus­ sels settled down ind held the Hawks scoreless for the final 10 minutes of play. Exeter outshot Brussels 16-4 in the third period and 39-27 overall.'Referee Peter Chis­ holm called 30 minutes in penalties, 14 against the Bulls. Sunday afternoon the Bulls won their fifth consecutive game defeat­ ing the visiting Seaforth Cents 7-4. The Bulls powerplay opened the game scoring twice as Ron Strome and Brian Campbell set-up Marty Rutledgefollowedby a'Campbell goal assisted by Strome and Rut­ ledge. Seaforth narrowed the mar­ gin but a Campbell shorthanded goal from Rutledge gave the Bulls a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes. Marty Rutledge scored the only goal of the middle frame on assists from Campbell and Strome. Brussels increased their lead to 6-1 on a break-a-way goal by Dwaine Nicholls from Mike Vincent and Bill Kinahant and a Bob McMillan marker from Jason Coulter and Ken Jacklin. As in previous games the Bulls let the opposition back into the contest watching Seaforth score three consecutive goals before a Ron Strome bank shot into an empty net sealed a 7 to 4 victory. John Steffler faced 18 shots for his second win of the season. The Bulls travel to Lucan Wednes­ day night for an 8:15 start followed by a Saturday night journey to Wellesley. Blyth Atoms start season with 2 wins BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Atoms started their W.O.A.A. regular Reason last week with two victories. Last Wednesday, November2, they hosted Huron Park and struggl­ ed to a 5-4 win. Blyth was clearly the more dominant team but they kept letting Huron Park get too close for comfort. Brian McNichol and Brad Ander­ son set up Blyth’s first goal on a powerplay as Christopher Howson popped in the loose puck. Ryan Chamney made it 2-0 as Jason Rutledge and defenceman Tim Cowan set him up. Huron Park got on the scoreboard before Peter Craig closed out the first period scoring with an unassist­ ed right wing rush. Peter gave Blyth a 4-1 lead in the second period as he intercepted an opposition clearing pass and whipp­ ed the puck into the top corner. Blyth let Huron Park narrow the lead to 4-3 before Ryan Chamney scored the winner thanks to Jason Rutledge and Peter Craig. Huron Park closed to within one goal again but Blyth held off a late game rally with some key saves and strong checking. Blyth finally got their game in gear on Friday, November 4 as they travelled to Brussels and overpower­ ed the home team 7-2. They built a Crusaders beat Arthur Continued from page 18 period Brussels outshot Arthur 13 to 4. The third period was all Brussels as they fired 25 shots at the Arthur goal. Under this heavy barrage the Arthur goalie faltered a bit and the Crusaders fired six goals past him. Thirteen seconds into the period Kevin McArter deflected a center­ ing pass from Ken Cousins to begin the rout. Dave Stephenson also assisted on the goal. Two minutes later Brian Ten Pas shot from the point eluding the Arthur goalie. Assists went to Troy Pocaluyko and Mike Watson. Troy Pocaluyko intercepted a clearing pass and went in alone to score a shorthand goal to make the score 6 to 0. With seven minutes remaining Brian Ten Pas deflected a screen shot into the Arthur goal with assists going to Troy Pocaluyko and Darrin Watts. A minute later, Darren Watts’ sharp angle shot found the open corner to up the Crusaders lead to 8 toO. Dave Montgomery drew an assist on the goal. In the dying seconds of the game with the Crusaders playing a man short, Kevin McArter picked out a clearing pass from Paul Mont­ gomery and skated in all alone out of position and backhanded the puck into the net to make the final score 9 to 0. Even though goalie Mike Smith only faced 19 shots he made several good saves to earn the shutout. In exhibition play last Sunday in Ripley a shorthanded Crusader squad skated to a 6 to 3 victory. In this game Troy Pocaluyko and Ken Cousins each scored two goals to lead the Crusaders. Tim Fritz also had a fine night earning three points on a goal and three assists. Ken Higgins also scored for the Crusa­ ders. This week the Crusaders play two important matches. On Friday they travel to Wellesley to take on the Merchants in a game that has sole possession of first place at stake. On Sunday at 8 p.m. the Crusaders host their arch rivals from Seaforth which, if past history continues, should be an exciting, hard-fought game. 2-0 first period lead on goals from the defence corps. PeterCraig scored on a screen shot as Ryan Chamney won a face-off deep in the Brussel’s zone five seconds into a power play. Jonathan Collins got into the act later in the period as he intercepted an errant clearing pass and threaded a shot through the five hole. Seven seconds into the second period Jason Rutledge redirected a Ryan Chamney shot past the startled goaltender. A picture perfect pass­ ing play resulted in Blyth’s fourth goal as Christopher Howson had the honour thanks to linemates Henry Bos and Brian McNichol. Thirty seconds later McNichol and Howson set up Henry Bos, whose wicked blast deflected off the goalie’s glove and into the net. Brussels scored the next two goals but Blyth capped the scoring midway through the final frame with two quick markers. Scott Arthur and Peter Craig set up Ryan Chamney who put a shifty deke on the Brussels’ defenders. A wild scram­ ble around the net resulted in the final goal as Christopher Howson assisted on Brian McNichol’s goal. Blyth has two road games this week as they travel to Zurich on Wednesday, November 9 and they travel to Goderich on Thursday, November 10 for a 7 o’clock exhibition encounter.See this week's 8 page flyer for a full listing of Features & Coupons.
