Blyth Atoms start
season with 2 wins
BY RUSTY BLADES
The Blyth Atoms started their
W.O.A.A. regular Reason last week
with two victories.
Last Wednesday, November2,
they hosted Huron Park and struggl
ed to a 5-4 win. Blyth was clearly the
more dominant team but they kept
letting Huron Park get too close for
comfort.
Brian McNichol and Brad Ander
son set up Blyth’s first goal on a
powerplay as Christopher Howson
popped in the loose puck. Ryan
Chamney made it 2-0 as Jason
Rutledge and defenceman Tim
Cowan set him up.
Huron Park got on the scoreboard
before Peter Craig closed out the
first period scoring with an unassist
ed right wing rush.
Peter gave Blyth a 4-1 lead in the
second period as he intercepted an
opposition clearing pass and whipp
ed the puck into the top corner. Blyth
let Huron Park narrow the lead to 4-3
before Ryan Chamney scored the
winner thanks to Jason Rutledge and
Peter Craig. Huron Park closed to
within one goal again but Blyth held
off a late game rally with some key
saves and strong checking.
Blyth finally got their game in gear
on Friday, November 4 as they
travelled to Brussels and overpower
ed the home team 7-2. They built a

period Brussels outshot Arthur 13 to
4.
The third period was all Brussels
as they fired 25 shots at the Arthur
goal. Under this heavy barrage the
Arthur goalie faltered a bit and the
Crusaders fired six goals past him.
Thirteen seconds into the period
Kevin McArter deflected a center
ing pass from Ken Cousins to begin
the rout. Dave Stephenson also
assisted on the goal. Two minutes
later Brian Ten Pas shot from the
point eluding the Arthur goalie.
Assists went to Troy Pocaluyko and
Mike Watson.
Troy Pocaluyko intercepted a
clearing pass and went in alone to
score a shorthand goal to make the
score 6 to 0. With seven minutes
remaining Brian Ten Pas deflected a
screen shot into the Arthur goal with
assists going to Troy Pocaluyko and
Darrin Watts.
A minute later, Darren Watts’
sharp angle shot found the open
corner to up the Crusaders lead to 8
toO. Dave Montgomery drew an
assist on the goal.
In the dying seconds of the game
with the Crusaders playing a man
short, Kevin McArter picked out a
clearing pass from Paul Mont
gomery and skated in all alone out of
position and backhanded the puck
into the net to make the final score 9
to 0.
Even though goalie Mike Smith
only faced 19 shots he made several
good saves to earn the shutout.
In exhibition play last Sunday in
Ripley a shorthanded Crusader
squad skated to a 6 to 3 victory. In
this game Troy Pocaluyko and Ken
Cousins each scored two goals to
lead the Crusaders. Tim Fritz also
had a fine night earning three points
on a goal and three assists. Ken
Higgins also scored for the Crusa
ders.
This week the Crusaders play two
important matches. On Friday they
travel to Wellesley to take on the
Merchants in a game that has sole
possession of first place at stake. On
Sunday at 8 p.m. the Crusaders host
their arch rivals from Seaforth
which, if past history continues,
should be an exciting, hard-fought
game.
2-0 first period lead on goals from the
defence corps. PeterCraig scored on
a screen shot as Ryan Chamney won
a face-off deep in the Brussel’s zone
five seconds into a power play.
Jonathan Collins got into the act
later in the period as he intercepted
an errant clearing pass and threaded
a shot through the five hole.
Seven seconds into the second
period Jason Rutledge redirected a
Ryan Chamney shot past the startled
goaltender. A picture perfect pass
ing play resulted in Blyth’s fourth
goal as Christopher Howson had the
honour thanks to linemates Henry
Bos and Brian McNichol. Thirty
seconds later McNichol and Howson
set up Henry Bos, whose wicked
blast deflected off the goalie’s glove
and into the net.
Brussels scored the next two goals
but Blyth capped the scoring
midway through the final frame with
two quick markers. Scott Arthur and
Peter Craig set up Ryan Chamney
who put a shifty deke on the
Brussels’ defenders. A wild scram
ble around the net resulted in the
final goal as Christopher Howson
assisted on Brian McNichol’s goal.
Blyth has two road games this
week as they travel to Zurich on
Wednesday, November 9 and they
travel to Goderich on Thursday,
November 10 for a 7 o’clock
exhibition encounter.See this week's 8 page flyer for a full
