Ryan scored the hat-trick to lead his team to the win. Blyth in season opener Crusaders still undefeated The Brussels Crusaders remain the only undefeated team in the Southern Loop of the W.O.A.A. Intermediate League. On Sunday, the Crusaders travell­ ed to Drayton to face the unbeaten Comets. Offensive was the order of the day with the Crusaders winning 10 to 7. The first two periods were wide open with the teams combining to score seven goals in each period. Kevin McArter opened the scoring five and a half minutes into the game converting passes from Len Stamper and Ken Cousins. How­ ever, Drayton bounced back to score two quick goals to take the lead. Rob Cardiff notched a powerplay goal on a set up from Ken Cousins to tie the game. With three and a half minutes left in the period Dave Montgomery scored to give the Crusaders the lead with assists going to Brian Ten Pas and Troy Pocaluyko. With 57 seconds left in the period Drayton scored to tie the score at 3 to 3. However, Troy Pocaluyko converted passes from Dave Montgomery and Trevor Poca­ luyko to regain the Crusaders lead. Early in the second period Dray­ ton scored to again tie the game. The Crusaders rebounded quickly to take a two-goal lead. Brian Ten Pas scored from Troy Pocaluyko and Paul Montgomery and Dave Mont­ gomery notched a powerplay goal from Brian Ten Pas and David Stephenson to give the Crusaders a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Midway through the period Dray­ ton scored to cut the Crusaders’ lead to one goal, however, the Crusaders scored three unanswered goals to take a commanding 9 to 5 lead. Kevin McArter began the scoring spree with an unassisted goal. Dave Stephenson then connected on passes from Brian Ten Pas and Troy Pocaluyko. Brian Ten Pas scored the final goal of the period with assists going to line mates Dave Montgo­ mery and Troy Pocaluyko. The third period was much calmer as only three goals were scored. Sports Drayton notched a goal at the midway mark of the period to cut the Crusader lead to 9 to 6. However, 14 seconds later Kevin Deitner scored a powerplay goal on a pass from Ken Cousins to regain the Crusaders’ four goal lead. With eight minutes left in the game Drayton scored the final goal of the shootout to make the final score 10 to 7 in the Crusaders’ favour. DOMINATE ARTHUR On Saturday night the Crusaders hosted the Arthur Tigers. The Crusaders completely dominated the game as they outshot Arthur 54 to 19. Six minutes into the game Dave Montgomery converted a pass from Trevor Pocaluyko to give the Crusa­ ders a 1 to 0 lead. In the dying seconds of the period David Steph­ enson bounced on an errant Tiger pass to go in all alone on the Arthur goal and fire a wrist-shot into top corner of the net. During the period the Crusaders outshot the Tigers 16 to 8. During the second period the Crusaders continued to take the play to Arthur only to be foiled time and again by goalie Bill Stimpson. The only goal of the period was scored by David Stephenson as he converted a pass from Randy Clarke. During the Brussels Pee Wees took a first period lead and held on for a 5-2 win over Blyth in W O A A Pee W ee play in Brussels Friday night. Ryan Finch scored a hat-trick to lead his team to the win. He started the scoring with an unassisted goal with 13:39 left in the first period then, along with Matt Lee, assisted on Brad Beuermann’s goal with 6:44 left. Early in the second period Ryan Finch scored his second goal, assisted by Greg Fritz, to give Brussels a 3-0 lead going into the third period. After tightening up defensively late in the period, Blyth put on an offensive burstearly in the third. Less than two minutes into the period Tim Lyons scored Blyth’s first goal with Mark Bricker and Conrad Bos assisting. Mike Bromley, from Jerrod Button and Tyler Craig scored less than a minute later to make it a close game. The teams traded scoring chances for several minutes before Ryan Finch gave Brussels a two-goal cushionagainat5:50with assists going to Tim Machan and Matt Lee. Then a minute later Matt Lee scored from Brad Beuermann and Shawn Johnston to give Brussels its final lead of 5-2. Of the money, $3,700 went toward the purchase of the new Champion tractor-mounted ice re-surfacer seen in the background, while the remainder will be used for other projects at the recreation centre.
