HCBE candidates question effectiveness of education DON ALTON Candidate for HCBE VICKY CULBERT East and West Wawanosh and Ashfieid Townships Don Alton is perhaps one of the most colourful candidates running for municipal office in the November 14 election, a reputation that does not bother him a bit. “At least people know what I stand for,’’ says the outspoken West Wawanosh farmer. He is making his second bid for a seat on the Huron County Board of Education because he feels there are Candidate for HCBE East and West Wawanosh and Ashfield Townships With three children in elementary school, Vicky Culbert says that she decided to make her first bid for a seat on the Huron County Board of Education because she is very concerned with the quality of education that many children seem to be getting, especially at the elementary level. “A lot of kids can barely read, and their spelling is atrocious - this has been building for a long time now, and I’m sure there must be something local (boards of educa tion) can do to upgrade the standards," she explained. “The present system is just not meeting the needs of many of our kids." Mrs. Culbert also feels the board of education should press vigorously for better capital funding: “Almost all of our schools need repairs and renovations - it’s getting critical in some cases," she said. She would also like to see the HCBE take a firm stand in retaining the Lord’s Prayer as part of the opening exercises in the classroom. “It works for the majority - and I’ve never heard any complaints," she said. Mrs. Culbertand her husband, Charles, operate a back-hoe busi ness in the Nile, where the family lives. Mrs. Culbert is also a steward of the Nile United Church, and is secretary-treasurer of the Maitland Golf and Country Club in Goderich. TONY McQUAIL Candidate for HCBE East and West Wawanosh and Ashfield Township Despite the hectic schedule im posed on him as he seeks to represent the riding of Huron-Bruce in the upcomingfederal election, Tony McQuail of RR 1, Lucknow, says he was persuaded to seek a third some “rather large discrepencies’’ between the quality of education and the amount of money spent on it. “The local board should have more input into the (provincial) standards ofeducation,’’ Mr. Alton maintains. “Trustees should be able to work with parents at a level that rattles a few chains wherever they need to be rattled to achieve the desired results.’’ Mr. Alton is also concerned that children with learning difficulties are not being recognized or helped early enough in the county; that only trustees with children in the school system should be elected; that trustees should never serve for more than two terms; that teachers should not be paid for non-teaching days; and the municipalities should put a ceiling on local education costs. “The people who pay these taxes are running out of money - it’s as simple as that,’’ Mr. Alton said. As a parent himself, Mr. McQuail says he recognizes the importance of giving children a good basic educa tion in order to prepare them for the realities of their futures, adding that he has tried to serve diligently throughout the past six years. He says that his major concerns, if elected, will be to continue to work toward greater communication be- tweentheHCBEand parents and other adults in order to make them full participants in the educational process; and to continue to push for the “nuts and bolts’’ issue of achieving the most cost-effective means of expansion and renovation for Huron county public school facilities.
