Once again the youngsters in this community take to the ice to check, skate and score in the timeless sport called hockey. Mostoftheboysin Blyth started out the season with a week of hockey school under the guidance of Larry Lane and Doug Neil from Wingham and John Stewart of Blyth. The boys received coaching and much needed condi tioning in this first week. Week two saw practises and tryouts starting for all the players in Blyth. Week three of October saw the teams take to the ice for more practise and the coaching staff trying to arrange lines and find players most suited to play with each other. Finally, what everyone was waiting for, referee’s booked, ice time scheduled, teams arranged and finally “the first game”. The Atom Houseleague team had their first game on Saturday, Oct. 29 versus Goderich Houseleauge Atoms. The Blyth boys were eager to get the game underway and didn’t even take the time to warm-up goalie Chris Bromley. The boys wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Mike Salverda set up Jason McDougall and Jason scored the Overloads win, tie The Blyth Radford Overloads Oldtimers opened their hockey season this past week recording a win and a tie. On Saturday, Oct. 22 Blyth travelled to Ripley and upset the home town team with a 7 to 4 victory. Chad Haggitt then scored assisted by Chris Stewart. With 1:18 left in the first period Goderich scored their only goal of the game on a fine passing play. At 11:15 of the second period Chad Haggitt scored unassisted as he stole the puck from a Goderich defenceman and wasted no time beating the opposing goalie. Jason McDougall put the Blyth boys ahead by three goals on a fine passing play from John Armstrong and Chad Haggitt. Fred Datema closed the scoring as he flipped a rebound past the sprawling Goderich goalie. Chris Stewart and Chad Haggitt received assists on this goal. The whole team played very well with Chris Bromley making a number of key saves and Chad Haggitt providing some much- needed scoring punch. Rookie coach Kevin Lee provided some much needed support behind the bench as he ably assisted head coach Ralph Datema. The help of Gord Haggitt and Wayne McDougall in practise helped round out the coaching staff. The Atom Houseleague team travels to Bayfield next Saturday to open the regular season there. This hopefully was the first of many fine games by this young team. matched with plenty of end to end action. The final score was 3 to 3. The Goodtimers opened the scor ing early in the first period. However, the Overloads responded with three straight goals scored by Jim Carter, Tom Jarrett and Doug Scrimgeour. Wingham stormed back scoring twice to tie the game. The Overloads missed several opportunities to notch the winner late in the game. Again the Blyth goaltending was impressive as Harry Wilson stopped a two man Wingham breakaway with less than a minute to play. The Overloads next game is Wednesday, Nov. 2 in Blyth, against the Ayton Oldtimers at 9 p.m. Mike Vincent increased the lead in the second on a set-up by Campbell and Buchanan. The Bulls then stood around and watched until finally in the last minute of play Seaforth notched two goals to close the gap to 3- 2 after two periods. Vincent’s goal from center ice midway through the third period followed by a Jason Coulter power play marker from Bob McMillan and Kevin Talsma gave the Bulls a 5-2 lead. Seaforth fought back with a goal at the 13:02 mark but Brussels ended the scoring when Steve Fritz notched his first from Rutledge and Talsma for a 6-3 final score. Murray Townsend stopped 32 shots for his first win as a Bull. Sunday afternoon the Bulls climb ed above the .500 mark with a 6-5 victory over the visiting Tavistock Braves. The Bulls jumped quickly into a 2-0 lead as their powerplay clicked on goals from Brian Campbell and Mike Vincent, both assisted by Ron Strome and Marty Rutledge. Not to be outdone the Tavistock specialty teams notched a shorthanded and a powerplay goal to tie the score at two. Early in the second the Bulls powerplay again scored when Rut ledge set up Strome. At the midway point of the period Rutledge scored from Campbell to make the score 4- 2. Tavistock closed to within one but Rutledge scored his second of the game from Campbell and Robertson. Again Tavistock fought back scoring late in the period and trailed Brussels 5-4 after two periods. With 10 minutes remaining in the game Campbell was set up by Talsma and Strome for a 6-4 lead. Once again Tavistock came within one and tension mounted as Brus sels found themselves down six skaters to three for the final minute ofplay. Fortunately the Brussels penalty-killers and Jeff McGavin held the fort for a final 6-5 victory. A special mention goes out to the Bulls’ powerplay which accounted for 18 of the 31 goals scored by Brussels during the month of October. A question to the OHA: were there no referees closer than the crew from Collingwood to officiate Sunday’s game? The Bulls next home game is Sunday, November6at2p.m. vs. Seaforth. They travel to Exeter Friday night for an 8:30 start.
