BY RUSTY BLADES
Well, the hockey season is once
again upon us as all the local teams
are being fine tuned for another
winter of puck pleasures.
The Blyth Atom rep team played
theirfirstgameof the season last
Wednesday, October 26 when Sea
forth came to town for an exhibition
encounter. Seaforth once again
proved that they will be a force to be
reckoned with this year as they
drubbed the home team 9 - 2.
Seaforth opened the scoring but
Blyth tied the game at 1-1 as Mike
Salverda pounced on a loose puck at
the edge of the crease after Brian
McNichol’s initial shot was stopped
by the Seaforth goaltender. It was all
downhill for Blyth after that as
Seaforth dominated the game with
pin point passing.
Blyth closed out the scoring with
one second left in the game as Jason
Rutledge and Ryan Chamney set up
Chris Howson for the marker.
Hopefully, things will improve
this week as Blyth hosts Huron Park
at 7:15 on Wednesday, November 2
and then they travel to Brussels on
Friday, November 4 at 7:45 p.m.

Crusaders start season with win
The Brussels Crusaders opened
the regular season successfully with
a well earned 8 to 5 victory over a
determined and much improved
Milverton squad.
Six minutes into the game speed
ster Kevin Deitner intercepted an
errant clearing pass in the Milverton
end and blasted a shot by a startled
Milverton goalie. Midway through
the period, Milverton scored on the
powerplay to knot the score at one
apiece.
A minute later the Crusaders
regained their lead with a powerplay
goal of their own. After taking a pass
from Dave Stephenson, Ken Cousin

During this past summer, a
community opinion survey dealing
with the recreation and cultural
needs of Wingham and area resi
dents was distributed to approxi
mately 1,900 area households. The
results of the survey have been
tabulated and some very significant
issues have emerged.
They show that:
•1. The most significant public
issue is the resotration and/or
beautification of the Lower Town
Dam are a. Two-thirds of the com
munity rate it as high priority.
•2. Swimming is by far the most
popular and most desired recrea-
tional/cultural activity.
•3. There is widespread support
fora new centralized community
facility which could contain among
other features, an indoor pool, a new
ice pad, banquet and meeting
rooms, etc.
•4. More people believe there is a
greater need for an indoor pool than
fed a perfect pass to rookie Rob
Willis at the side of the net whoeasily
topped the puck into the open side of
the net. With 24 seconds left in the
period Kevin Deitner scored his
secondgoalofthe game on a pass
from Trevor Pocaluyko to give the
Crusaders a 3 to 1 lead. During the
period the Crusaders outshot Mil
verton 13 to 9.
The second period was a fairly
even period of hockey with both
goalies making several good saves.
With six minutes left in the period
Milverton scored to reduce the
Crusaders’ lead to one goal. How

older.
•6. The community believes that
teens and the disabled have inade

activities.
On November 10, the Wingham
and Area Recreation Master Plan
Committee will be hosting three very
significant workshops with area
residents to debate the most impor

Montgomery sent Darren Watts into
theclearwithaperfectlead pass.
Darren made no mistakes as he
tucked the puck into the near corner
of the net. Ken Higgins also assisted
on the goal. During the second
period the Crusaders outshot Mil
verton 14 to 10.
Thethirdperiod was wide open
with both teams going all out for the
victory. One minute into the period
Crusader Troy Pocaluyko took a pass
at the Milverton blueline, deked the
defenceman and skated in all alone
and fired the puck past the Milver
ton goalie. This shorthand goal
which was assisted by Brian Ten Pas
and Dave Montgomery gave the
Crusaders a 5 to 2 lead.
However, a minute and a half later
Milverton socred on the powerplay

goals. The red hot line of Mont
gomery, Pocaluyko and Ten Pas
regained the Crusader three-goal
lead with Dave Montgomery firing
the puck home.
With eight minutes remaining,
Milverton scored to cut the Crusa
ders’ lead to 6 to 4. With just under
five minutestoplay the Crusader
powerplay connected as Brian Ten
Pas deflected a slapshot from
defenceman Ken Higgins over a
powerplay connected with a minute
and a half left in the game to cut the
lead to 7 to 5. In the final minute of
the game Dave Montgomery was
sent in a lone on the Milverton goalie
on passes by Pocaluyko and Ten Pas.
Dave made no mistakes as he deked
the goalie and tapped the puck into
the open side of the net. During the
period the Crusaders outshot Mil
verton 14 to 9 for game totals of 41 to
28.
Before the game, this year’s team
wearing their new home white
uniforms with blue and red trim were
introduced. Former Intermediate
executive member Neil Beuermann
presented the Crusaders with their
Intermediate “A” and Grand
Championship banners.
Special mention should go to
former O.H.A. referee Clarke Pol
lock, who refereed a good game and
also kept some of the fans entertain
ed with his quick wit. Hats off to the
line of Montgomery, Ten Pas and
Pocaluyko for a 12-point night and
special mention to Dave for his two
goals and three assists.
The Crusaders play at home next
Saturday at 8 p.m. against the
Arthur Tigers. On Sunday they play
