County council briefs County sets limits for road maintenance If Huron County has a severe winter this year don’t expect to see the roads kept in the same condition they’ve been in for the last two mild winters'. According to a winter mainten ance policy adopted by the Huron County Council Oct. 6, people will just have to accept that they’ll have to slow down when weather conditions aren’t good, County Engineer Dennis Merrall told council. The policy will seek to maintain acentre, or track-bare conditions for county highways. “We don’t have the budget to keep roads bare 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” he said. And, he said, he wouldn’t recommend trying to maintain that standard even if there was that big a budget. ***** The Huron Addiction Assess ment and Referral Program has got off to a busy start with nearly 100 clients already using the service and the numbers increasing stead ily. Of the 94 cases served reported to the Board of Health committee meeting, 71 were male and 23 female. Twenty-eight were be tween the ages of 16 and 25; 44 were 26-40; 21,41-65 and one over 65. Goderich had the highest total of clients, 25, while Brussels had 3 and none were reported from Blyth. Dr. Maarten Bokhout said there had been some minor problems but “on the whole, the program is doing just fine.” ***** The Board of Health is pushing Thanksgiving WMS theme The October Thanksgiving meeting of Melville Women’s Missionary Society was held in the Church parlor with 13 members in attenance. Hymns were sung with Wilma Hemingway at the piano. The secretary and treasurer reportsweregiven. Aletterwas read from Ellen Waldock, a Missionary home on furlough from Africa for donations given her. More diapers and bandages are needed as well as greeting cards. An invitation was read from the U.C. A poem “What shall I render unto the Lord” was read by Helen Elliott. Isabel Adams led in prayer. The topic on Thanksgiving was givenby Thelma Cardiff. Helen Elliott closed the meeting with prayer. The lunch committee served a lovely cup of tea and cookies and a social time was enjoyed. for a decision on a pilot project for One Stop Access, Dr. Bokhout said. The project has been held up pending the provincial govern ment’s allocation of money but Dr. Bokhout said from a conversation he had with Murray Elston, Chairman of the Cabinet Board of Management, he understood the money would be forthcoming because it had already been allocated and would escape government cutbacks. Huron M.P.P. Jack Riddell had also said he would support the project, Dr. Bokhout said. Whether the project goes ahead or not, the doctor said, he hopes for a decision soon. He said there are a lot of people who have spent a lot of time meeting and doing their homework preparing to implement the program and they need to get an okay to go ahead or to be able to get on with their personal and professional lives. ***** Approval has been granted for the purchase of $77,474.68 worth of emergency rescue equipment for Huron County Fire Depart ments under the provincial govern ment’s JEPP Grant.
