Local girls vie for Huron Dairy Princess crown Three young women, all of them from The Citizen’s readership area, will be competing for the title of 1988-89 Huron County Dairy Princess this Saturday at the Howick Community Centre. The girls will meet the judges for the first time late in the afternoon, fora round of activities culminating in the crowning of the new princess at about 10 p.m. Each contestant will have a 15-minute interview with the contest judges, starting at about 5:30 p.m., and then will be guests of honour at the Dairy Princess dinner and dance, which are open toall. The formal speeches take place following the meal, and the new princess will be crowned by reigning Dairy Princess Brenda Nancekivell of RR 1, Clifford, during a break in the dance. The competitors for the 1988-89 are as follows: MARLENE ALBERS of RR 2, Bluevale is 18 years old, is in her final year at F.E. Madill Secondary School, and lives with her parents, Peter and Helen, on the family’s dairy farm. Marlene enjoys work­ ing on the farm, biking and music, being a member of the FEMSS band and proficient in both the trombone and piano. She is an active 4-H Club member, having received her Provincial Honours certificate for the completion of 12 4-H clubs, and hopes to pursue a careerinFoodService Manage­ ment at one of the province’s agricultural colleges. Marlene was also a contestant in the 1988 Huron County Queen of the Furrow competition held last month. LISA BOONSTOPPEL of RR 1, Auburn, is 19 years old and in her second year in the journalism program at Humber College in Toronto, where she is active on the student newspaper; she also works part time at a clothing store in Toronto. The daughter of dairy farmers Hans and Audrey Boon- stoppel, Lisa has been active in both agriculture and life skills 4-H programs, and has completed nine projects; she also gained promi­ nence as a public speaking con­ testant throughout her school years. Lisa’s hobby is photo­ graphy, and she has always been very active in sports, currently being a member of the Humber College Women’s Softball team. A graduate of Central Huron Secon­ dary School, Lisa was a Work Experience student at The Citizen in 1986-87, where she was first exposed to journalism. LAURA HALLAHAN of RR 3, Blyth is 17 years old, the daughter of dairy farmers Jim and Lorraine Hallahan. She is inGrade 12atF.E. Madill Secondary School and may pursue a career in teaching, and is very active in 4-H work. She is the current president of the Hallrice 4-H Dairy Calf Club and a past competitoratboth the Silver Dollar Competition and the Hays Classic, as well as a prominent competitor on the local show circuit. In addition, she took part in the 4-H Exchange between Ontario and LISA BOONSTOPPEL out the coming year, and will be available as a public speaker representing Huron County milk and cream producers. Next Au- gust, she will go on to compete at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto for the title of Ontario Dairy Princess. Serving as a Dairy Princess is a demanding job, but the satisfac­ tion of a job well done make up for a lot of it, says Brenda Bridge of RR 4, Kincardine, the 1988-89 co-or­ dinator of the Huron County Dairy Princess Program, who is herself a former Bruce County Dairy Prin­ cess, a former Miss Paisley Fall Fair, a very active 4-H Club leader and the second vice-president of the Bruce County 4-H Leaders’ Association. ‘ ‘It’s very difficult to fulfill all the demands made on you as a county Dairy Princess and to keep up your grades at school, but the fun and the rewards of the job make it all worth while,” Mrs. Bridge said. Tickets to the Huron County Dairy Princess pageant and dance are available from any director of the Huron County Milk Commit­ tee, which sponsors the annual competition, or from Mrs. Bridge at 395-5911. Tickets to the dance and following luncheon are $7 each. Laura enjoys reading and sports, has been very active in her local softball league and is a member of bothherschool’svolleyball and badminton squads. Laura was the youngest competitor in the recent Huron County Queen of the Furrow competition. The winner of the county Dairy Princess title will represent the dairy industry in Huron through- Corn Producers welcome review The Ontario Corn Producers Association is delighted that Agri­ culture Minister Don Mazankow- ski has announced a “thorough review’ ’ of the presticides registra­ tion system. The OCPA has been calling for an overall review for more than a year, and complained that former agriculture minister John Wise was not responding.
