CHARLES CARPENTIER BRUSSELS & ETHEL UNITED CHURCHES As one room leads into another, sodoes one month intothe next, and October is telling us that the warm days of summer are coming towards their end. and the routine of the fall has begun with its regular work to bring in the harvest of the fields. In this month there will be the new gourds and pumpkins, and at the end. small imps and ghostswill come trick-or-treating at your door. October is the month of Thanksgiving time, and as every one knows it shouldn’t be just for one day. To be thankful, is like true love and cannot be forced. Let me tell you a little story. When an adoring grandmother gave herfive year old granddaugh ter, one of those new Canadian dollar pieces, “the Looney”, the child held it tightly in her little fist but remained silent. “What must you say. to grandma?’' she was asked by her mother. The kid answered by saying: “It’s not enough grandma!!’’ It is not enough! Let me press this a step further and ask if there is one person who is reading this article, who looking into the past, can truthfully say: “I have never stood with the little girl, accepting a blessing, or a gift, without being thankful?" Will noteachoneofus have to confess that there have been many times when we have said in our hearts if not on our lips; “Eh, Lord God, this is what I wanted, but you skimped you didn’t give enough!" or ‘ ‘ Lord, you must have misunder stood. I don’t want this!" I do not suggestfor one moment that we are to clap our hands gleefully, or jump up and down with joy exclaiming, “See how thankful I am.’’ But I do suggest that thanksgiving is not one of life’s luxuries; it is rather one of life’s necessities. I do suggest that without it something happens to i Blyth Christian HIGHWAY A Reformed Church4 BLYTH October 9-10a. m. & 2:30p.m. Rev. S. Because, life cannot defeat the person who learns to praise God, for everything, and be truly thankful for the privilege of living. Therefore, Thanksgiving in Canada is a time neither to gloat or to grovel. It is a chance to be r Business & Professional responsibly thankful for the bounty that has come to us in this good land. Our overflowing tables are symbols of a fruitfulness intended for more than just ourselves. They remind us of our responsibility as Canadians to see that the apples get passed around. Well, happy October, wherever you are, and wherever this October finds or takes us. God bless us there, you and me. WMS Presbytery visits Russian Orthodox church On September 26, two busloads of W.M.S. members of Maitland Presbyterial met in Wingham to go to Toronto to visit a Russian Orthodox Church and see their many icons (paintings of Biblical events) which adorn it, A typical Russian meal was served by the women of the church. This included: borscht, (cabbage soup); piroshok, (a small oblong roll containing meat); pelmeny, (small egg-roll type cooked in water) and for dessert, cheese cake with tea or coffee.
