Presbytery rejects United Church policy
Perth Presbytery have joined the
rebellion against the United
Church of Canada’s policy that
allows ordination of ministers
regardless of their sexual orienta

At a meeting in Wingham, Sept.
27, the 69-church Presbytery
affirmed a policy that said: “We
expect members of the United
Church of Canada and most
certainly our ministers to believe,
practise and promote fidelity
within marriage. Therefore we
believe that self-declared, practis

-ing homosexual persons are unac
ceptable and unsuitable as mini
sters in the United Church of
Canada.”
Three southwestern Ontario
presbyteries have now come out in
opposition to the church’s decision
made at the 32nd General Council
meeting in August. The Middlesex
Presbytery representing 73
churches in the London area
opposed the church policy at a
meeting Tuesday of last week and
the Oxford Presbytery voted a
week earlier against the policy.
Some churches in the Kent and
Essex area have voted to break
away from the United Church over
the issue and have formed their
own church out of the rift. One
minister from the London confer
ence said that the decisions by the
presbyteries should show “the
light at the end of the tunnel” for
church members unhappy with the
church’s decision. “It’s a message
for those ready to abandon ship:
hang in there,” he said.
